The Epic Slide Thread

i used to use glass for electric and brass for acoustic but ive gone to glass for everything these days

This thread has me wanting to go back to glass but I know I am going to break the frigging slide sooner or later. I love the glass slide I have now it is slightly shorter and has a thick wall. It is much lighter and easier to control than brass. I also feel it sounds better.

I love slide.. but I don't play it everyday so it takes me at least a couple of sessions before I get back up to speed.

Practically all of my guitars like different slides.. my strats tend to use nines and 10s and like full thickness glass. The glass doesn't push too hard on the strings and gives a delicate kind of tone.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, my Parker night fly has 12s and it loves the big fat thick fender brass slide. The heavy strings and relative heavy action easily support that monster mass, and combined with those heavy strings, it growls like a Sasquatch.

And smack in the middle, my Reverend likes a heavy Chrome plated steel slide and the tone also falls right in the middle.

I play slide and chords on all my guitars and practically always play in standard tuning with a lot of muting going on.

As far as fingers, I switch back and forth between three and four pretty regularly. I use the pinky when I've got a lot of cording to do but I tend to favor the third finger for muting purposes. Honestly I never think about it, it just feels right on the correct finger on the specific song.

Big hint for beginners or those who have fought slides in the past.. it's all about muting. Run major and minor scales completely staccato until you can do it in your sleep. Once muting is automatic, it's easy to open up for the big legato glissandos and then tighten the mutes back up to avoid the slop on the detail stuff.

i used to drop & break my glass ones , i purchased a V pick slide over 10 yrs ago , has not broke yet, it just bounce's even on concrete i use it on ring finger...

mine is really thick, i think i ordered a large (fat fingers) & i had to ream it out some with a wornout flapper wheel, for some reason , the ones shone on the website the dont look as thick , i guess i will call Vinny..

nice. ill have to see if that 3/4" size works, for $15 its worth a try as long as it fits.

i just spoke with Vinny, & i was correct in the thickness , he can not get the material for the thick ones 1/4'' the ones he sells now is 1/8'' thick, lucky i called , he hads one 1/4'' thick one left , only it was 2 1/4 '' long instead of 2 1/2 '' length, it is on its way here, i am glad i read this thread today,
