1 - beck, she's a woman, imo the greatest phrasing of all time, in a word......perfect, 2 - beck, come dancing, again phrasing to die for,3 - eddie, meanstreets(the middle solo, not the intro), it's just so angry, visceral and raw, 4 - srv, texas flood, flat out the best blues song i've ever heard,5 - uli, catch you train, imo the most underrated player in 20 years, the sound he gets from the opening feedback is unreal, he must have had like 5 stacks all cranked in the studio, if you've never heard it you gotta check it out, melody tone, chops, taste and fire all thrown in a blender.

Re: the five solos that get me everytime

1. Ice Cream Man - Van Halen, everytime I hear that first lick in the solo my mouth drops the same way it did years ago.

2. Heaven Tonight - Yngwie Malmsteen
Yngwie really shows those f*cks who call him "soulless" and "boring" how wrong they are, this solo is just a TON of feel.

3. Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd, what can be said about this that hasnt been said already

4. When A Blind Man Cries - Deep Purple, Has a more beautiful solo ever been recorded?

5. Stargazer - Rainbow, this just kicks your ass, and it knows it

6. Son of Alerik - Deep Purple , The greatest instrumental ever written, hands down. its a bonus track on Perfect Strangers album, if you dont have it
DOWNLOAD IT, I PROMISE you will not be disappointed, if theres one thing I can not lie about and promise to mankind in my life, its this.

listen to any you havent heard, I guarantee you'll love it

those are in No Particular order either except Son of Alerik is at the top

Re: the five solos that get me everytime

i have always felt that yngwie plays with a ton of soul and is a true master, far beyond the sun is his masterpiece imo. never heard the purple tune , gotta check it out.

Re: the five solos that get me everytime

I never liked Son of Alerik- when I finally heard it a few years ago, I was expecting more..kind of rambles. For Blackmore solos, I like the live version of Mistreated. My favorite Purple solos are with Morse though, even as a huge Blackmore fan.

I'd like to add Allan Holdsworth's Three Sheets to the Wind, Robert Fripp's Starless, Steve Howe's Perpetual Change, and Deep Purple's Cascades.

Re: the five solos that get me everytime

here are the next five that get edged out of top ten, 6 - lynch, night by night, my fave george solo, the tone is ridiculous and incredible phrasing, 7 - skolnick, souls of black, so well constructed and blazing, 8 - vinnie moore,as time slips by(fadeout solo), it's the ultimate marriage of soul, chops and expression,9 - marty friedman, hangar 18,phrasing that blows me away,10 - jake.e.lee,dancin on the edge, just plain rip your face off smokin.

Re: the five solos that get me everytime

if anyone has rhapsody i have a playlist up entitled "guitar solos for serious guitarists", check it out if ya want and hopefully be inspired.

Re: the five solos that get me everytime

Bohemian Rhapsody
Comfortably Numb
Back In Black (as great as the main riff is, the sheer swagger at the beginning of the first solo always makes me groove.)
Sweet Child O' Mine (where the wah kicks in)
Where Were You by Jeff Beck

I can't decide the order.

EDIT: come to think of it there's a million other songs that tie for every position. 5 is too hard.

my old guitar teacher kept telling me how great he was live. He never seems to be in Toronto anymore.

Re: the five solos that get me everytime

from trower to yngwie to reverend horton to satriani i've seen em live and enjoyed them all but beck on a good night is almost a religious experience. i've tried in the past to find the right words but all i can say is he does'nt play a guitar, he manhandles and strangles it one moment and then plays the prettiest thing ever the next second ,all with the greatest phrasing i've ever heard. check him out even if you have to drive 400 miles, it'll be worth it.

Re: the five solos that get me everytime

Well, I have seen some live videos of Jeff Beck and they were amazing. I particularly like the ones circulating on Youtube of "A Day in the Life" and "Brush With the Blues"... "Drown in My Own Tears" is good too.
