The Fix "Red Sky At Night"

I used to think that I didn't like a glassy sounding strat, but the more I hear the good ol' stuff from The Fix the more I'm sure that I like it. Their other great tune is One Thing Leads to Another. Are those classic bright glassy tones neck, bridge or middle A5 pickups?

I have a neck Texas Hot, if I put a Surfer in the middle and a Texas Hot Custom bridge in my JV strat. Would that give me nice glass from the middle Surfer?

Can that be done TH, Surfer, THCB?

Re: The Fix "Red Sky At Night"

I always thought of those sounds (The Fixx) as bridge sounds. One thing is that he always used a ton of effects, which helped cut any bright harshness that might of been there.

Great Band from an interesting time.

Re: The Fix "Red Sky At Night"

Compression and Roland JC-120's are the biggest part of his sound.

Re: The Fix "Red Sky At Night"

I was guessin' the bridge position was the most likley pup. I may have to look into the Roland JC-120 and some compression as well.

What was that players name? He may have some of the best clean tones ever...His stuff sounded sogood. I wonder what he have sounded like live.

gtoad-
I like your taste! Always tried to get the red skies sound - will be interested to hear what you find out!

Re: The Fix "Red Sky At Night"

He does have some good cleans, flashbacks here talking about those songs :) But I do have to say that I think the wickedest strat cleans are from the dude who played for Chris Isaak on "Wicked Game".

That's a strat on Wicked Game? I always thought that was a hollow body. Must be the thick reverb.

It was, if I'm not mistaken. I'm 99% sure that's not a strat, and I'm also too lazy to verify it.

While we're talking about great strat tones, may I nominate the tones in Red Rider's "Lunatic Fringe"?

Sounds like the bridge/middle notch tone to me.

Re: The Fix "Red Sky At Night"

fixx guitarist = jamie west oram

great strat tones from the 'heavy time based effects' 80s

i always thought that 'wicked game' was a gretsch

Re: The Fix "Red Sky At Night"

Wicked Game is a Strat and if you are interested the players name is James Calvin Wilsey and is a regular on the TDRPI forum and goes by the name WickedGTR!!!!

Re: The Fix "Red Sky At Night"

I just had to get in on this one. I have always loved the fixxs' music and really like his strat sounds. Yeah and red skies at night is one of my favorite songs of theirs. (one of them). I would recomend checking out their "calm animals" album as it has some cool songs on it. Especially "the flow". Beautiful song, sweet guitar melodies, sweet guitar sounds, and their is so much emotion in this song. I think the sound is the bridge/middle combined. Hope so since my strat has a bucker in the bridge.
