They seem to be more typical of the 80s metal sound, which people simply aren't desiring like they used to be. That said, however, there are still a lot of guys using those pickups on this board. I've never used the Full Shred, but I do love the Screamin Demon. I've got an HSS strat copy with a demon in the bridge and a Mockingbird with a demon in the neck. I think it's a bit underrated for the neck, myself. Pretty searing lead tone that balances well with the higher output humbuckers.

I think thats a pretty good observation, but the funny thing is..all those 80s sounds weren't really done with either of those pups. They were done with Gibsons PAFs, Super Distortions, Duncan JB's & Distortions, etc
Both of those pups were custom made for 2 guys back then..Lynch (obviously) and Viv Campbell (the Full Shred) for bolt on neck super-strats and are voiced with that in mind. Folks have gravitated back to classic guitars, classic fat sounds or full blown fat distortion for the nu/death metal kidz..neither of those pups are very "fat"..nor sweet, nor warm and are kind of middling output....so they kinda get lost inbetween...introduced after the 80s sound boom, and right before that genre was pushed aside for grunge. Kinda doomed them both from the start. Very niche products.

I think the combination of Demon bridge and Jazz neck is the best to use with a high gain amp that provide distortion because those p-u are so dynamic and clear , they won't be muchy .
Tone i don't like : dimarzio high ouput p-u ( like Michael Romeo's XN2 ) where all you have is distortion and you froget that it is a guitar that play , no attack , just a buzz Well the Demon and Jazz and the opposite philosophy : clong it first and then you can add as much distortion or gain you want .

i firmly believe those are two of the pickups in the SD line that suffer the most from their niche naming moreso than their niche sonic properties ... everyone raves about their clarity (both clean and with gain) ... yet the names conjur up images of leather/spandex/blood/death/metal mayhem

from the duncan samples i´ve listened to the full shred and the jazz caught my attention the most as being wonderfully articule.
i dont agree with the duncan tone chart showing the full shred as being bright .at least not to my ears.very midrangey with the right amount of bass and highs.

its a shame you gotta give pickups like the distortion, screaming demon, jazz, full shred etc names like they have.. it's necessary to distinguish them, yeah - but i think it'd be in SD's best interests to really nail home the versatility message..
an ad campaign, or some middle-of-the-road blues player using a full shred set - it blatently happens, but people need to know

I don't agree that the name Distortion doesn't fit to the pickup.
The pickup has good leads, but as i was looking the first time for a hotter pickup, i got the SH-6 and was satisfied.
With lot of gain the pickup is raw, but not muddy.
And as far as the full shred goes, the pickups sounds too much compressed for my ears.
It sounds like hotter pickup compressed into a medium output pickup.

could you imagine a totally cool advertising campaign for SD ... full color / full page mag ads .. of 'guys like us' ... maybe 4 on a page ... pic / name / gear / music we play / SD pups we use and why they work for our music ... some could reinforce stereotypes (gotta SELL the things after all) and some could 'bend' them (this is not your grandfather's jazz pickup) ... and not just high $$ guitars and amps ... get some "Epi into Line6" guys (jolly!) ...

I had a Screamin Demon in the bridge once in my SG, and it was one of the worst humbuckers ive ever tried, extremely thin and bright and alot of shrill especially because the bridge position needed warming up. But since ive tried the custom it is far better sounding in the bridge to my ears.

yea, its got the HiFi vibe without sounding compressed... if you take the difference made between 9v and 18v mod EMGs, and multiply it, you'll get the idea..
i love it. the demon's cleans are fantastic IMO, but i only really use valve amps..
