The General - Part I: intro to my symphonic folk album

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
I have been working on this for a while, writing all sorts of variations, but have returned back to my original idea of symphonic folk for this song ... here's the songwriting demo for the intro. It's basically temp everything, as the orchestral bits need to be articulated and the guitars are just DI for now so they will be replaced with mic'd guitars later on as well.

Anyway, hope you like:

EDIT: File was updated on 29Nov 15.

Pretty damn nifty, I don't think I've even heard the term "symphonic folk" before.

Re: The General - Part I: intro to my symphonic folk album

Thanks. It's kind of a sub genre of prog, so it's not surprising you have never heard of it.

The building section until 1:20 is amazing.
The part from 1:20 'till 1:27 needs more power, more density.
I don't know how to explain it, it seems too short and isn't as epic as the prelude suggests it would be.
(Maybe lengthen it and redo the winds? my opinion though)

The second part is great, the instruments work well together.

Anyway: I like it ;o)

Thanks for the detailed listen!

Awesome! I was expecting happy metal ...but that was really mellow/moody/proggy....

Re: The General - Part I: intro to my symphonic folk album

Uh this is epic...love it man.
Thanks! It's fleshing out nicely. When I have the entire piece locked in, I can bounce the orchestral elements down and start layering them up.
But for being bare bones (toms, violins, cell, trombone, glockenspiel, castanets), it sounds quite full.

Re: The General - Part I: intro to my symphonic folk album

nice! it needs moar cowbell!!!

a little more glockenspiel couldnt hurt either

I know this isn't your intent, but that is one of the most hipster sounding things I've ever heard.

It's pretty neat. A few questions/ constructive criticisms:

-Are those guitars all DI'd? Sound extremely stiff and lifeless. The playing and arrangement is great however. Some parts almost sound like its MIDI
-The intro and the initial riff at 1:27....I personally think this would be brought to a whole new level if this was a bass with some modulation playing this. I think it lacks depth because of this.
-Not going to comment on the sound of the strings/ horn as I know those are VST's. The arrangement is cool though, especially in the second part.
-Drums at the intro sound great and I think lend to the more ambient direction this should take.

Overall I really dig the writing/ arrangement and I realize this is still in demo/ development stage but I think it would benefit from some re-recording and production overhaul (mainly to do with the guitars though).

Stoked to hear how this develops
