the goblet of rock...in a box

drew_half_empty

Looking for Real Life
anyone ever played a blues driver? If so, you know how they sound, shrill highs, sort of a fuzzy mud sound, well, i just did some mods to one, and all i can say is this:

MY GOD, THE HOLY GRAIL

it makes my hot rod deluxe (open back, eminence legend 125's) and basswood guitar with a 59 bridge, sound like a les paul thru a, well, its not quite mesa, if you can picture it, its like a really fat marshall distortion, with that modern mesa kinda crunch to it.

I am very very very happy with it, i can get great cleans AND closed back high gain sounds out of the same amp, and for REAL cheap.

What kind of mods did you do to it? Care to post or send a schematic?

Keeley and Indy have schematics and info about this mod via the net....Not my favorite pedal...Scroll to the bottom of the link for the mod info...Pretty limited amout of mods can be done on this one because of all the tantalatum caps...Naturally I have my own ideas on the mods and don't copy other people's mods, but the info on keeley's page might help?

Re: the goblet of rock...in a box

i don't have a schematic, only a spec sheet. I promised strat i wouldn't take away from his pedal modding business, so if you'd like i can PM him the sheet & then he can do it for you

Thanks Drew...It's a hobby for me buddy,so I'm cool with whatever you'd like to post...You aren't taking anything away from me.. I have my own mods ideas,as everyone modding pedals does,so it's all good...

Re: the goblet of rock...in a box

ok, well, here's the rundown

take out:
c8
c9
c14
c17
c18
c19
c100 (tone cap)
d8
d9
d10

take the c14 cap & put it in c100
take c18 and put it in c8
take c9 & put it in d9
take c100 and put it in c18

and heres the rest

c14 - .22uf
c17 & 19 - .1uf
d8 & d10 - LED (yes strat, its necessary, stock bd-2 is WAY too harsh, this smoothes it out a bit, but it'll still have great crunch)

yes, c9 is removed altogether

Re: the goblet of rock...in a box

John-Thanks for the links, you're tha man! ;)

Drew- Sorry, didn't know you had these specs from somebody else... I thought it was just from ya... don't want to interfere with anything or anybody, I was just curious as john's got me hooked on pedal modding (altho I'm not much of a modder yet...).

Gracias men!

Re: the goblet of rock...in a box

usually what i do is take someone elses & mod them to fit my rig better, but this one was just perfect, haha, i have zero complaints

Re: the goblet of rock...in a box

I believe your exact rection to me on AIM was, "It's like a fat Marshall on Boogie pills!" :D

I have a BD2 that I need modded but there's so many different versions of mods that I have to decide which one I want.

Re: the goblet of rock...in a box

Just in a rough kind of explanition please; how do you go about modding a pedal i thought that most just had printed circuit boards?

If you are going to copy someone else's mods, than you just need to be good at unsoldering the old components and soldering in the replacements..This makes you a parts replacer.. :newangel:

If you have a pretty well rounded knowledge of how these circuits work, and a good ear,you then can look at a schematic or the pedal's circuit board and components and tweak the circuit...If you know what to change and where to make the changes, you start experimenting with substituting values of components and listen to how the pedal's tone changes...There are some folks that are expecting someone like myself that has been doing electronic stuff on amps, guitars, and effects for several years, that want to learn this stuff overnight..It's not going to happen..My suggestion is getting either an electronics course or some books on electronics...The ability to be able to get inside a pedal and tweak it to sound great is something that is partly special and a gift of good ears and years of messing with similar circuits...Like guitar playing, there are no short cuts..You can copy someone else's mods, and this is fine(I guess)but it isn't something that you yourself came up with.. :smack:

There aren't currently any books available yet that I've seen that show you how to mod cirtain pedals, but also have a good understanding of why the component you replace changes the circuit...The more knowledge you have of the circuit, the easier it becomes later on to repair if someone has to send a pedal back to you...The guy with the actual knowledge might take minutes to repair the problem because he knows what part of the circuit isn't working right...The other guy is the parts replacer again and starts replacing components randomly in hopes of fixing the problem..This can take hours and days or never fixing the problem at all...If you do luck out and fix the problem, wouldn't it be nice to know why you fixed the problem? Anyway...You catch my drift...

Re: the goblet of rock...in a box

not necessarily

for instance, by doing other peoples mods, you learn what caps affect what, the purpose of LED's, film caps, jumpers, so after you study some mod sheets for a cerain pedal for awhile & do some tweaking, you can change the pedal to sound however you want. But, you can only do mods on that pedal, that's the catch

Well that's cool....With all of the questions you were recently asking me lately,I really thought you were trying to stay on easy street? I learn as I go and it's worked great for me...Keep at it..

Re: the goblet of rock...in a box

Any chance of a sound clip? Also, is the amp you're using it through solid or tube?

:D

Re: the goblet of rock...in a box

tube amp, hot rod deluxe, thats why its so impressive

and no, my recording equip is VERY sub-par

me? easy street? no way. I'm going to tech college as soon as i get outta highschool to go take an electronics course, and then go to all the certifications for boss & fender & marshall & all that. Tech is basically my career path, i'm learning everything i can
