Re: The Great December 2009 Riff-Off Unveiling!

Thanks super rad! And thanks to everyone that voted for me throughout this thing. It was a lot of fun, and nerve wracking too! And thanks to PUH for running the contest. I'm really surprised that I won the final - I really liked super's last riff more than mine after giving it a few listens. I was feeling pretty confident during the first three rounds, but I wasn't so sure during the final.

Anyway - I really enjoyed this competition and I'm looking forward to just listening and voting in the next one.

Oh and if anyone was wondering about the name "cyberBKP" - - tha comes from the amp I used and the pickup I used - a Fender Cyber Deluxe (except for the last clip which was a Vox Tonelab LE) and a Bare Knuckle VHII bridge pickup. The guitar was my Warmoth Goldtop LP. I used the contest to experiment with different tones and blends of tones just to see what I thought sounded good. I think I got some good ideas for future recordings.

Do I get my title changed over my avatar? hehehe

Here's the heavily Photoshopped final bracket, with cyberBKP pissing all over the competition:

Congrats GoDrex! Nice job, I gladly admit I voted for you on every round... you have hit the spot as far as it comes for my tastes...

Do I get my title changed over my avatar? hehehe

Getting glossed, the ultimate internet recognition... :smack:

Re: The Great December 2009 Riff-Off Unveiling!

I think it would be cool to resticky all the rounds for a couple of days just so I can go back and listen without having to search through the forum. Or, PUH, maybe you can post a rundown thread with links to all the entries again?

When I was voting on a week-to-week basis, I made a conscious point to avoid looking at names. I wanted the riff to win, not the competitor, per se. And it didn't even work. I made judgments on several guys whose riffs really hit home with me, but I tried not to. Anyways, to make it easier, Keith, maybe you could put all the entries back up in a new thread? Please? :D

Yeah, I can do that. I'll put them in this thread, along with any other recap stuff. Give me a few minutes.

that contest bracket picture is too funny :)

Re: The Great December 2009 Riff-Off Unveiling!

Hats off to you GoDrex, and thanks again for completely crushing me in the first round by the biggest margin , I think, and totally destroying any self confidence in my writing/recording abilities/inabilities for any other future public displays :)

Thanks - and glad I could help. ;)

Re: The Great December 2009 Riff-Off Unveiling!

I really had fun with the contest. For round one I kept in my comfort zone. Thus the very AC/DC like riff. I can hammer stuff like this all day long 'cause it's just fun for me to do so. (gear used....PRS / marshall jvm 410 / recto 2x12 / audio technica 4033...reverb added at the board while recording)

For round two I was experimenting with open D tuning (DADF#AD)..something that I rarely do. I was looking to get out of my comfort zone with a slide riff. I had a really nice slide riff going but could not get the intonation to my satisfaction as I'm not very practiced in slide. (I have to lay the guitar on my lap) Time was running short so I submitted a simple little piece that was fingered instead. (gear used...Taylor 310CE / audio technica 4033...fx added at the board during recording.)

For round three open E was working for me as I tried my hand at some electric slide riffage. Again I had a good riff but the intonation wasn't thrilling me. So it was back to fingers. (gear used ...Gibson LP Firebrand with Dimarzios / TS9 / JVM 410 / Demeter silent speaker chamber loaded with a 100 watt Jensen / SM57.) I also used the direct out from the amp. Mic signal panned to one side amp signal panned to the other. Bit of reverb added at the board during recording.

Re: The Great December 2009 Riff-Off Unveiling!

Congrats! I missed the voting in the last round - couldn't decide which one I liked best :(

And congrats to all who made it further than I did. Totally shocked and yet not surprised it was ex250 who beat me in R1. I thought for sure it was Diocletian

Anyhoo, let's get jiggy with the 2nd Tournament :D
