Re: The Great February 2010 Riff-Off Unveiling!

Man, I suck at guessing who contestants are!

Congratulations, Tor! I am extremely happy that you won .... your riffs were consistently great and you proved that you don't have to be a hard rock or metal riffer to come out on top! I'm not sure if this is the right way to say it, but to me you've validated the whole process!

Thanks to everyone for their encouraging and helpful comments. I really learned a lot this February about recording, chord voicings, and my tendency to be as compulsive as time will allow ........ and had a blast doing it.

To B2D and particularly GoDrex concerning the abrupt cut-offs on my submissions: There was no prerecorded material, there are no songs, and there is no band. My submissions were all developed specifically for the Riff-Off. I usually play a riff over and over for three or four minutes and then listen to it. If I can't find two passes in succession that I like I erase it all and repeat the process. This process goes on for 3 - 5 hours .... LOL. When I finally settle on two in a row that I can live with I highlight those passages in Reaper and then "trim to take". The highlight always seems to move (on its own) to a grid line of sorts rather than where I set the curser. There is much to learn!!

I shall return!!

Best of luck to Tor and B2D in their showdown!

Way to go Tor! :) Again, congrats to everyone that was involved.

Oh yeah, anyone want to give me some more detailed critiques on my riffs? ;) (Son of Fibonacci...)

Re: The Great February 2010 Riff-Off Unveiling!

shout out to Gamera (aka Boob) - - yours was my favorite riff of the whole contest.

Thanks much! I was so tempted to say something during that first round and I really appreciated your support and the cool feedback I got from all. Most of the feedback I received was about how it made them feel or where it took them. I thought that was pretty cool and saw it as a small victory in my own way.

I also saw the truth in what a number of other folks have already said: Know your audience. My riff was actually written (or a variation on it) many years ago along with many other snippets that I always meant to but never committed to a full song or recording. The intention was to name the song "dissonance" and it was very much inspired by a desire to break the musical theory "rules" I was learning and feeling confined by at the time. That and a very messed up girl I just broke up with at the time. What else is new? ;) But given that, there was no way it could compete against the riffs written specifically for this purpose, this criteria, and this audience.

It was a cool challenge and congrats to all who competed. I'll definitely be going back and giving another listen or two now that I know your identities. I may or may not be back, we'll see. Another thing I realized during the riff-off was that music, especially what I write, has always been an escape for me and very personal. I've learned to offer up my design/drawing skills to criticism to put food on the table. I always told myself I didn't want that to happen to music so it would still be enjoyable to me. I had fun for the first round but I could see it getting stressful and turning into work in later rounds. A big hat's off to those who can stick it out and keep coming up with cool stuff!

Re: The Great February 2010 Riff-Off Unveiling!

congrats to all ...i too am a bad guesser .. which makes it fun ... especially when i find myself admiring the playing of someone who (it turns out) i might otherwise butt heads with on other topics ... shows me that nothing on here is worth getting riled up about especially 'cause the guy i am getting ticked at likely would turn out to be a player i admire

i really like the anonymity ... i wish folks would stop posting their guesses - and even MORE i wish that people would not break the anonymity ESPECIALLY while they are still active participants ... its one thing for people to guess because a player has an identifiable tone or style .. its another thing to have it confirmed

i am sitting out this month because work is crazy and i expect to be working long hours unable to guarantee that i can get riffs in on time ...

i hope to be back in the future as a riffer ... i'll still be listening, commenting, and voting

good luck to all

Re: The Great February 2010 Riff-Off Unveiling!

Wow...

Where to start.. Well, first off, thanks to every single one who voted for me..! I deeply appreciate the fact that you took the time to listen to my clips, and assess it in the polls. :)

I've been dying to make some small comments in each thread. ;) So here they are:

Round 1: that westernish riff was made with my Takamine directly into the Lexicon interface.

I like the harmonic at the end, I'd like to hear a few more throughout the riff too.

Yup, I agree! I originally had a central harmonic right before the second round of the riff, but at the time I felt the descending bass notes had to be there too... If I do something more with that riff later, I will strongly consider your suggestion.

Round 2: bluesy riff with my Takamine. The tuning was an open D tuning (I am not sure about that actually).

So, no 12-stringer. I think the fact that my ligthest string (D) was slightly out of tune with the next string (also a D) made it seem like it was. And B2D pointed out the sourness, and I just have to apologize for that - it was recorded just before it had to be sent to Keith, and I was so stressed to make the playing right that it sort of made me blind on the tuning issues.. When I listened to the clip after Keith had published it, I jumped back at the sour sound. Sorry!

Someone pointed out it was too similar to a certain song (and I found out through Keith that it was a Crowded House song). I am sorry if you felt that connection right away, but that was in no way my intention; I don't think I've ever heard the song (I am not even sure if I've ever heard Crowded House at all) - maybe subconsciously on the radio, but nothing more than that. That does not take away the fact that some of you made that connection, and if this riff (just hypothetically of course) should have gotten airplay in the US, that's a very valid and important point to consider.

Round 3: half-jazzy upbeat riff with the Parker Nitefly (Jazz neck) and the AxeFX.

A lot of people commented that it felt kinda empty, for instance:

I agree that this one is well-played and well-recorded, but it just doesn't grab me. I hate to say it, but I wanna hear more bells and whistles. Play around with the rhythm a bit, or add some more trills here or there.

And I agree wholeheartedly. I should have done more to make it stand more out.

So I think those that said it would sit much better in a band mix, are dead on. I guess I was a little too influenced by my band background (playing mostly funky gospel for three years - and yeah, I know it's an oxymoron!). But I would still keep the clean tone free from effects.

I'm cringing at the syncopated part though (especially the ascending part), it was soo not tight.. Oh well, next time!

Round 4: slow funky slidey thing with the G&L Legacy into the AxeFX.

I like this riff. I'd like to hear it about 15 bpm faster...

Yeah! I know. But this was due to bad planning on my part and limitations as a technical player. I had three hours of composing something, recording it and sending it to Keith (I had not forgot the whole contest of course, I had something else recorded from earlier in the week I could use as a plan B, but I didn't feel it was what I wanted to do for this last round). So this was the result. I wanted to go faster, but I didn't have the riff as a second-nature yet, which made me imprecise in sliding, so I turned down the tempo (the riff as a whole is still not really tight (transition from slides to chord strums), so I'm not too proud of it).. But I agree, it should definitely have been faster.

gonna be a very weird showdown between B2D and muzzy for supremo - very divergent styles

I don't know about that.. Personally, I want to play a lot of different styles - I'm not sure what I'll be shooting for yet....

I have gotten positive comments and criticism throughout this month. I'm happy when I see people liking what I can offer. I'm equally happy to see people taking the time to give me comments so that I can improve my guitar playing (or composing, or whatever). Thanks to all who voiced their opinions! And for everyone, I want to state this once and for all, when it comes to me, I appreciate brutal honesty. That's the only thing that will improve me as a musician. :)

Re: The Great February 2010 Riff-Off Unveiling!

As for the contestants, there are so many good players with good sense of music in here. However, I quickly had Adam and Lazarus as my favorites - they delivered big time in every round....! However, Adam somehow forgot about sending in the riff for the round 3, and that was just PURE LUCK for me. Because he and Lazarus would no doubt go to the round 4. So Miss Fortuna was with me there. In the round 4, I was a little demotivated, because knowing Lazarus' earlier contributions, this was really just a predetermined obligatory round. But it didn't turn out that way in the end, and I am still really surprised how this could happen.

Congratulations, Tor! I am extremely happy that you won .... your riffs were consistently great and you proved that you don't have to be a hard rock or metal riffer to come out on top! I'm not sure if this is the right way to say it, but to me you've validated the whole process!

Thanks...! :) My participation here evolved into a challenge of keeping the riffs clean, although I could try go for the more metal stuff. I was surprised that style did go so far, but even more happy. ;)

It was really cool to hear your playing; you have a heckuva interesting style! Impressive!! As we see in the statistics I gathered after all four rounds (accumulated), you were far above me, as your mean was at 4.30 and mine was at 4.03 (btw, standard deviations are very comparable, which is interesting to know). So overall, you were the clear winner out of the two of us! I am looking forward to hearing your future submissions! :)

Considering Adam would have gone to the final as well if he just had his memory right, I consider the two of you as the real champions of this. Me, I was just being real, real lucky...

I want to encourage everyone to take up the challenge this contest constitutes - the fun factor is through the roof once you're in! :)

Lastly, I want to thank Keith for doing this job - out of everyone involved in the contest, he is the one who has done the most impressive work, I'd say!

Re: The Great February 2010 Riff-Off Unveiling!

it was interesting for me to note that in round 1, i gave only two 6s - to muzzy and gerry troll ... and in the second round, again, these were the two i rated higher than any others ... i was getting concerned when muzzy received fewer votes per round (only 43 in round 1 - only 26 in round 2) .. glad it didnt effect his ascension to the throne :D

edit: I was also very fond of your style and PFD's style. Good riffs through and through! Strange Counting was really interesting too, heck, there are so many good players in here... It's been an honor to be able to compete with ya'll. :)

You guys blow my mind with all the statistics ........ :)

Considering Adam would have gone to the final as well if he just had his memory right, I consider the two of you as the real champions of this. Me, I was just being real, real lucky...

Well, there are always other possibilities ... but the clear winner is the player with the highest average score in Round 4, and that's the way it should be!

I agree that it should be like that.. But it's nice for you to know that you had a higher average score than me in total. ;)

I'm extremely happy with 2nd place! My goal upon entering was to make it past round one.

Yeah, I'm really glad to see that you made it as far as you did, especially after what happened the first time. Great effort on your part!

Re: The Great February 2010 Riff-Off Unveiling!

Oh yes... CONGRATULATIONS TO TOR!!! Cool riffs all around. A few blurps here and there but hey, that's how you learn! Glad to see you've got the right attitude as well.

I'm anxious to see what requirement PUH will throw at us for the title bout. We both have very different styles so it'll be interesting to see what happens. :)

Re: The Great February 2010 Riff-Off Unveiling!

Playing drunk in 15/16 time behind your head with gain on 11.

actually, 15/16 is one of the very few alternative time signatures i can play in, if only because of "the ocean" by zep:)

dude, i got something like, 14th place? dang i sucked this month:lmao:
