It's OK, I think I had the worst score in the whole tournament with my second round submission.

I used my Les Paul in both tracks, but this time I focused much more on the effects and creating something interesting with the riff. As I mentioned before, in January I specifically tried to win the Riff-Off. For February I tried to push the envelope of what is considered a "riff". (Obviously, some didn't like it )

The first submission was a Fender amp model with delay into tremolo. I specifically chose a major feel to offset the mostly minor riffs that are usually submitted.

The second submission used a volume pedal to swell into an analog delay and hall reverb patch. I fully admit is was sloppy, but I really liked this concept. I winder how it would fared with the same notes, only no swell and palm muted pedal notes in between. Unfortunately I bet it would have scored better. :scratchch

Nice job everyone, once I get some time I'd like to go through all the riffs again.

Your two submissions were among my favorites ... especially the Round 2 submission. That trem bar up bend was awesome. I listened to that riff over and over!

the thing i came up with was just some heavy noodling that i came accross one night and figured it was "spontaneous" enough to be cool. it obviously wasn't

I had guessed Daemon, Crusty and of course Adam, but the others were like putting a face to a name (apart from PFDarkside,- you sounded in disguise with this one dude.)

I need to know what DemonBBQ/Tesla Coil used on his first riff... that tone is really interesting.

Hahaha. well, that special tone is amde with a 7 string Ibanez, Tuned to 5ths from F1. the PU was the CS PATB7 . The tone happend that way, because the strings where too old and the PU was too lose.
The other round, I had new strings, tuned in C standard, and the PU was Q-Tuner super High Z (hence the clarity).

The recording method was always the same. Line6 UX2, Ableton Live 8.

Thank you Brendan BTW. You gave me the chance to still feel free when I record. People need more tones which they are used to hear, and I try to do something new :cool2:

Gamera was very cool too, even the battle name! very cool!

Crusty is awesome. Odd time signatures make me happy, and feel comfy!

Oh, and Ninja Monkey. In your age you should be more concerned about getting a front door LOL! Live the back doors for now!

And yes, it was easy to guess Who I was, nobody else had those big balls LOL. I think I am the the Heaviest around here.

Where are Jeff, Dankstar, Cgord, Bigheadood when you need them?

For those who didn't get my 2. riff.

Listen it with a 6/8 (better with double bass) around 120 bpm (I don't remember). It will make perfect sense, and you will get the structure!

Oh yes... CONGRATULATIONS TO TOR!!! Cool riffs all around. A few blurps here and there but hey, that's how you learn! Glad to see you've got the right attitude as well.

I'm anxious to see what requirement PUH will throw at us for the title bout. We both have very different styles so it'll be interesting to see what happens.

You have a very special and distinctive style - I'm curious to hear what you will present!

I have been thinking that Tor the guitarist can play some different kinds of music, but that he doesn't have any "personal style". To be honest, that thought has worried me a lot.. But lately I have found that I do have a style or voice, but that was not present in any of the submissions I had. If you listen to Layers that I posted in this section this week (or Trollsang in a New Wrapping - same soundclick page), that's my true voice as a guitarist.

However, in that kind of music, the total of the parts makes the music - in the Riff Off, you're challenged to make something that stands very well on its own, which I'm not used to. So this was a great opportunity for me to learn more of that part too.

I love that kind of playing, and I do it a lot myself. My favorite guitarist, Eivind Aarset, makes use of that a lot of the time. I didn't find so many clips that were really representative for that stuff, but this is something you might like:

it was real nice playing and real nice song writing

but to me it isnt a riff ... in fact, its kinda 2 riffs ... the bit that comes in around 28 to 30 seconds in just is a whole other thing

NP dude, to each their own. I gave plenty of 1's and 2's based on my own criteria.

I'm not much of a riffer, more of a song writer, I need to link ideas to make the riffs a whole. Maybe next time.

Congrats to both Tor and Laz... you guys were the highest scores I gave consistently throughout the riff off, so I think it validated the process as you guys made it to the finals.

You guys both played great and had great submissions all around, excellent job...

Laz your round 2 submission was excellent too, great clean tone and trem use... loved it...

A loose pickup and old strings... see, I would've fixed that in the setup stage. But it obviously worked for you.

Well, you need to tune to F1, and use a 0,70 Pure Nickel , and a PATB, there you have it hehehe.
It's not that I don't wanted that tone. I still love it, and miss it for slow and angry riffage. But the Q-Tuner is much more accurate and unforgiving. It drives to get better!
