The great Floyd Rose Big-Block Shootout.

Re: The great Floyd Rose Big-Block Shootout.

My tuning problems with a floating trem is if I want to occaisonally tune down a half step. Once my Floyds are set up for standard tuning, they never go out of tune- but once you downtune a little, the Floyd loses its parallel angle, it tilts back and has trouble staying in tune. That's why I like the Big Block with the non recessed Floyd on the Charvel

If you're changing the pitch a half step down overall, I find it's a good idea to block the bridge (with a Trem-stopper, the wrench, whatevs) while adjusting the tuning, then it's less of an issue once you're retuned...

But yeah, having said that I usually have dedicated guitars set up for standard, Eb, and drop C# tunings. :1:

Re: The great Floyd Rose Big-Block Shootout.

So I put this thing in my RG7620 and then blocked it with one of these...

Absolutely love it, to be honest. It eliminated quite a bit of the "dead/rubbery" feel that locking tremolos have, and the thing resonates like nothing I've ever heard out of a bolton/Floyded axe in the past. Definitely worth the cash!

Yep, I have a tremolo-stopper too, need more...great invention; I carried around a blocker made of cardboard and duct-tape for years, but that's pretty handy and it stays put!

That much can be said for any guitar the Big Blocks are installed in. LOVE the tonal difference. Increased resonance, sustain, note-transfer...you can't lose. :D

Re: The great Floyd Rose Big-Block Shootout.

I have an older Jackson JSX94 with a full floating Rose bridge. It has a pot-metal weight installed currently.

I've never worked on replacing parts on this style of a bridge though - what all would be involved replacing the weight? Just removing the bridge & weight and swapping it out with a new one? It's tough to see inside the cavity where and how the weight is connected - two screws or lag bolts possibly?

It's a fairly simple operation really - though of pivotal importance is keeping all the parts organized as you take them off for reassembly later (makes it waaaay less of a pain), but once you get the saddles off, the block is secured to the baseplate via 3 bolts.

Here's the Dr. Manhattan exploded view...

Re: The great Floyd Rose Big-Block Shootout.

Adam at Floydupgrades.com has videos online showing how to replace the block

Re: The great Floyd Rose Big-Block Shootout.

That's perfect - and I notice they have special blocks for different licenced manufacturers as well - This should be another cool project that I can expect some nice results from-

Thanks for the illustration & info.

And here's the link to the aforementioned video series...

Post your findings when you're done with the upgrade! :D

Re: The great Floyd Rose Big-Block Shootout.

Thread resurection for a great thread about the age old block questions for OFR's!:fing2:
I was going to start my own thread asking about this mod but this thread not only answered all my Q's but let me hear the differences too.
I hear the brass as my fav then the stock.
I would use the titanium only for a dark sounding guitar because i heard it as a edgier, brighter tone.
To me that brass big block is perfect for the jackson's and ibanez's i play going by the clips.
I can really see my RG's benefiting from a brass big block since i always felt they have a thinner tone than a reg super strat.
My jackson DK and kelly on the other hand will really love the brass block since they already sounds freakin killer!
