Fx in the first couple were only thanks to the iPhone voice recorder in an empty living room, with a broken accoustic in the first and an old stereo hi-fi and an old guitar with a 59n in the second one. Lo-fi as it gets (apart from that lovely 59 of course).  

Interestingly enough, that lo-fi setup only added to the mistique and mood of those riffs! You could work in the studio for hours trying to get an ambience that still doesn't match what a smart phone's voice memo recorder and natural room reverb did.

Totally man.

I was pissed that I was snowed in, but chuffed that the iPhone recorder allowed me in to the Tourney. Sounded even better than when I was able to get to my main guitar for the other riff.

It would be cool to jam with you sometime, our riffage is definately on the same page

Well, that was fun!

Congrats to B2D, I bow to your riffing! And congrats to everyone that participated, it's much easier to sit behind a computer screen and post than it is to write, record and present your own ideas to our little world. Thanks to everyone that voted for me, its really cool when other people like what you come up with.

My recording setup was a POD X3 into the line-in of my computer soundcard. All patches were based around the Citrus D30 model, with more or less gain and sometimes a Tube Screamer in front. This had worked well for me in the past on my previous computer, but this stock soundcard must be awful. I was getting dropouts and latency issues all over the place. I definately need to look into getting a dedicated recording soundcard! My battle name was obviously chosen in reference to the Psychological Condition of the same name.


On to the Riffs...

I was wondering if the P90 guitar was actually a bass at some points. I couldn't really peg that sound down, it was pretty cool actually.

Riff 5 was great, your best one, IMO. As soon as I heard it, I though, "****, I'm going down." :laugh2:

lol here it goes. I was REALLY tired...party the night before....forgot about timezones...and forgot to clip to the two earliest hits that I did to check volumes...

at least you partied, hehe. yeah, I know you can do better than that - your jazz clips are very impressive.

Maybe I should've taken PUH's advice and re-recorded my riff to be more... um, whatever it is that would have made it more "riff-like." I still don't quite understand the (obviously pretty common) criticism that it was not riff-like enough. I swear, it was mostly a 3-measure repeating 4/4 pattern! Part of me is still glad that I stuck with my original submission, and that a minority of people got what I was going for!

Here's what I think may have happened with your riff: Although it was repeating at its basic level, it is complex and had enough variations that the combination threw people.

Still, you went with your gut and stuck with what you wanted, and I respect that.

I had no problem at all. And I loved it. It might be on 11/22 sig and and with a 80bpm, I will still see it as one riff. It is up to you how long a chain should be. Some love basic chains and more repeats to get hammered in the head, and some like me (and apparently you) like actually longer, or complexer stuff. Nothing wrong with it.

I see also this competition as a study for my own feelings. I can create something catchy to feed common taste, but create egoistic pieces too. An honest expression would be the most beautiful one, but not everyone will get or love it. It is the nature of art. :friday:

This was me getting my feet wet, I definately was right in my comfort zone. I'm amazed how similar mine and guitfiddle's riffs were! Guitar was Mike's Clone #002 tuned to Drop C. with an EMG 85. I tried to keep it nice and fat and greasy on the bottom string bends.

I used my new US Tele on the neck with Bassman and TS models in Guitar Rig.

I got the boot in the first round both times, but I had fun, got a lot of votes even though I got the boot, and got some pretty dang good compliments out of it. I'll be back for the March round...I let other new folks take it this time.
