Well..."nurky" is one of those descriptions where it helps to see the expression on the face of the guy doing the describing. :laugh2:

Kind of a "nurky" look...

My brother Bruce describes some speakers as sounding "thumby"...I know just what he means! It's kind of like "tubby" but not as...tubby.

:laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: I love it...the terms that guys like us use to describe a tone is amazing...the crazy part is that we all make up word and seam to just know what they mean!!!

Why is more said about Fralin Vintage Hots than the Blues Specials? Blues Specials are supposed to be hotter and warmer, so are we to suggest that Fralin Vintage Hots are closer to Duncan Surfers, while the Fralin Blues Specials are closer to Duncan Texas Hots?

A blues special in the bridge is cool! Could use a little more bass (even with a baseplate). But otherwise, great pickup.

Blues specials (of either company, van zandts and fralins)for neck positions are not my cup of tea. They have that fender tx sp. feature of an annoying (to me at least) mid-spike.

Damn I couldn't use the word "nurky"! :smack:

Well that's cause alnico 5 pickups like the BS don't sound nurky! :smack: That term only applies to alnico 2 Texas Hot pickups with those nurky mids... :laugh2:

Nurky is kind of a pronounced midrange tone with slightly pinched/slightly quacky/slightly rubbery mids. :laugh2:

Alright, I got it, I get "nurky" in my mid/bridge position on my Beck Strat with the Texas Hots/Custom bridge thru the Bassman. I like "nurky". I say we vault "NURKIER" as an official term of endearment associated with "slightly pinched/slightly quacky/slightly rubbery mids. I love it!!! :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: You're the best, Lew!

Peace,

rio grande tallboys gave me that tone I always heard in my head and could never acheive. It's a shame they are so underrated. Everyone I know that tries them is blown away.

They are cool pickups to be sure, but I find them pretty dark. That being said though, they sound great when overdriven. Very smooth. I think they have a little too much compression like quality when very clean. Still, they're 100% better than AS stock if you're a rocker.

Re: The Greatest Strat pickups EVER??

This thread is definitely vault material. Personally, I like the Lace 6k Hot Gold in the bridge, Bill Lawrence 280-S in the middle, and the Kinman Blues in the neck. Classic Strat tones, none of the hum. I'm normally not a huge fan of most noiseless pickups, but these three really impressed me. I highly recommend this particular set, and you can even swap the order of the pickups and still get great results. But if you're a die-hard vintage single coil guy, you might not like them simply because you probably have it etched in your head that no noiseless single coil can sound as good as a real one.

The Duncan Antiquity Surfer pup is the best Strat pup I have ever heard. Thanks to my good buddy John Spina for letting me try one of his.

for me i think the texas hots nail the tone i want, the problem about "the best" is that its soo subjective. a buddy of mine has some fralins in a grosh strat and they sound nice but i like the antiquitys a little better, he likes the fralins better. a friend of mine who heard the surfers said it was the best strat sound he ever heard.

Jeremy, have you tried the Surfers in your axe?
