Without a doubt, Schecter!

I got a 006 DLX for 200.00 shipped brand new. It was a 2nd because it had a few pin holes in the finish. The neck felt great, solid guitar. The bridge pup was very JB-ish. Great guitar for playing or for a project.

Oh, sure...but the whole gist of the thread is still the same. It also makes me wonder if a lot of people still have the same choices in terms of the El Cheapo Holy Grail...:scratchch

Ok, I figured it might be a little late to help the guy, but as a thread comparing cheapo guitars it does seem pretty cool.

I dunno, my favorite guitars are parts guitars anyway, I think epiphone makes some great stuff, squier is hit or miss, It just depends on what you're looking for.

I like parts guitars too...well, I like spare parts a lot, and hot rodding guitars.

I have to admit I'm a bit biased when it comes to this, though. Reason being is that because of the way I play (lefty), I can't just walk into a music store and have a greeting of a wall of guitars beckoning. Most models out there...aren't available. Some companies do have a few token lefty models...but not many.

I suppose it's the biggest reason I got familiar with the Rondo Music site in the first place. 70 some odd models to choose from...just for lefties. And because you're not paying a middleman (Guitar Center, Musicians Friend, or another outlet) and it's direct, they can afford to sell the stuff cheaper than what's available anywhere else.

If you're seriously lookin' for a new, cheap guitar, Rondo ought to be considered. Another brand which I've seen a bit of over the past year is Xaviere from Guitar Fetish and the Vintage brand which seems to primarily cater to guitarists in the UK.

EDIT:

Speaking of cheap guitars...this one's 289 out the door from Guitar Fetish. (Wish they made a lefty version of it...and the archtop with P-90's)

"Rondo" reminds me of "Hondo"......cheap plywood guitars of the 80's...please tell me there's a BIG difference in the two......

Sure there is. The rule "you get what you pay for" still applies...but how much are you paying a distributor for?

I'll give this to Rondo....they're willing to put a lot of things in writing about their guitars that Epiphone isn't. (Or several other brands that maketh the cheapie guitars.)

This one's a porker. Most estimates I've heard from folks put it at around 11 to 12 pounds. BUT...the reports of owners also state it's pretty much a Les Paul...including the tonewoods...at a far cheaper price.

This one is advertised with the 3/4" maple cap...

One of the factories that made instruments for the Hondo brand was Matsumoku. And I can tell you those weren't made from plywood at all, they were made with the highest of standards in selection of tonewoods and craftmanship. Made in Japan by luthiers proud of what they were making.

So you know.

Re: The holy grail of CHEAP guitars...

Now my question is.........who here is willing to strip that Rondo down to find out if it is in fact a 3/4" maple cap? Are we to take their word for it?

I dunno......I had me one of those Hondo guitars in the early 80's.....it was a Rhoades V-copy......when I got around to stripping it down.......the body was 100% multiply laminated like construction-grade ply-board. Workable with an electrictronics switch, but definately nowhere near any form of tone-wood. That was one "cheap" guitar, and not an example of Hondo in general, but that one left a bad taste that's hard to get over.

I don't care what country a guitar is made in.......hell, the Turks could impress us all with Gibsons and Jacksons made with exotic Turkish woods, and we would lust after them.

Just build the **** thing pretty, and so that I can play it, that's all anyone should care about.

Eh, go for it. I suppose you could do that and take 'em to court if it isn't what they say it is.

Either way...I bought a Dauntless for under 300 bucks...modded the hell out of it. It's every bit as good (if not better) as either of my Epi LP's. (It's a bit of a different beast though...primarily it has a maple vs. a "mahoganish" neck or whatever it is Epi makes their necks out of.)

As stated...this is the only company I know that makes a LH silverburst.

Anyways....bear in mind when you buy from Guitar Center, or Sweetwater....you have to pay their overhead as well. And their employees, and their price to ship. The overhead is included in the price tag. With these guitars it's like Carvin...factory direct. (In fact, you could probably state that Rondo is akin to a poor man's Carvin.)

But heck, don't take my word for it....do some searching around if you're legitimately interested. (If not...well, peace to ya for payin' hundreds or thousands more to the Distributor. Hahahahah....)

Re: The holy grail of CHEAP guitars...

Just be clear......if one is buying a Rondo, they're not buying into Kirkland or Sam's Club...........right!?

Yeah I know that's not the case.........but it's a far cry for me to trust "Rondo" over anyone else that i can sue for being a false bee-atche when they charge hundreds and don't deliver.

Epi necks are mahog....the body is mahog.....the top may be something........different........:joke: Modded guitars.....I'm thinking there should be a different catagory. I've modded my Epi to the ends of Earth......Now I have a Schecter that begs for a mod......this modding is a sickness that wouldn't be necessary if "builders" would've done it right in the first place.

I have. They are what the say they are and they kick ass. The BEST bang for buck I've ever seen. If you can get past the name on the headstock you have one hell of a nice axe.

Re: The holy grail of CHEAP guitars...

This thing might qualify!!
I own a 99 WM-4 same guitar just had a name change the last year of production (1999). MSR was $1699 and these are absolute MONSTERS in tone materials workmanship and playability.
$500 on the BIN + shipping is absolutely a crazy cheap price for this kind of USA Custom Shop made true handbuilt (this is NOT a CNC guitar!!) boutique quality guitar!!

Dean Soltero Korean import seems like it might fit real well with your gear listed in your sig. About $400 on the used market and well worth it. :cool2: :scratchch :approve:
