The "I Love HOTRAILS" thread

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
Jolly calls last night asking a question about Hotrails in a Tele. As it happens I have had Hotrails twice - and once in a Tele.

This got me thinking....is it just me or does this pickup not get enough love? I'm obviously just a Humbucker/ P-90 guy anymore, but back in the all-kinds-of-guitar-days, I loved me some Hotrails!

I think it is a freaking awesome hot pickup.

Great output
Good highs but by no means ceramic harsh
Nice solid tight bass, without any boom
enough mids to push/cut without being over bearing

It just effing rawks :headbang:

Re: The "I Love HOTRAILS" thread

ehh, I find it kinda one dimensional in series. It's just too obnoxiously typical of a typical high output pickup (which is, I guess, the whole point....)

But in parallel, i LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE that sucker. Holy crap it's so snappy, sizzly, soulful, and articulate/ultra tight, and also gives the amp a nice strong push. It's like a classic strat neck single coil grew a pair of elephant sized balls with tusks to match.

It's such a great pickup and it gets a bad reputation. On other forums it has this reputation of 'Beginning Squier Bullet replacement because I want to learn more metalz but this guitar sounds like old men', and through cheap amps it certainly sounds weak, fizzy, buzzy, but honestly any hot pickup would sound like that under those conditions. I think the whole Rails line is underrated, I honestly suggest the Cool Rails to everyone I see who wants something fatter out of their strat neck: It has the clarity and snap of a good strat pickup, but takes gain much better and stays clear through anything while adding a lot of thickness and warmth.

If I ever get another strat, I'll be throwing in the full rails set for sure.

Re: The "I Love HOTRAILS" thread

I like it a lot in the middle and neck. I'd like it if the bridge position model had a little more going on in the highs.

Re: The "I Love HOTRAILS" thread

I love a Cool Rails bridge, which I suspect is a Hot Rails neck. So I guess I'm in the club. ;)

Re: The "I Love HOTRAILS" thread

I liked the Tele Hot Rails for a while, but I wanted to be able to get the standard tele sound/feel again. The high-output uber-compressed stacked humbucker just wouldn't do that for me.

Re: The "I Love HOTRAILS" thread

I freaking love Hot Rails. Dark, fat, and loud. I use them with a Super Switch and treat the coils like Strat pickups.

Re: The "I Love HOTRAILS" thread

Got a pair of Teles and a pair of Strats with Hotrails.....I dig 'em....

Re: The "I Love HOTRAILS" thread

Funny that this thread should come up right now, actually.

I had a Hot Rails in the bridge of a Strat copy and then my Pacifica for a while and loved them, but I eventually got rid of it because it was a bit too hot, dark and modern sounding. I'm sorely tempted to grab another one for the bridge of my Ibanez ORL-1 at the minute, since that's actually kinda what I'm going for with that guitar and it's lone pickup route is a single-sized bridge.

They're killer pickups, if that's the sound you're going for.

Re: The "I Love HOTRAILS" thread

I've got one at the neck of one of my Tele's, sounds purty frickin' good.

Re: The "I Love HOTRAILS" thread

I've got one in the neck of my alder Jackson Dk2 & it's awesome..warm, thick & super sweet for solo's!

Re: The "I Love HOTRAILS" thread

Mike Stern has Hot Rails in his Yamaha Tele.

Hot Rails as the product literature stresses out, is very sensitive and responsive to subtle picking movement, so when used with hi gain distortion it really facilitates the picking, the guitar's playability is significantly boosted.

Re: The "I Love HOTRAILS" thread

Hey I've been spamming the hots of the hot rails for years :)

Re: The "I Love HOTRAILS" thread

No doubt they are not loved by the Strat sound crowd. I can totally see how those guys love the Cool Rails way more.

But That ain't me! I want the rock, and the Hot Rails brings it!

Re: The "I Love HOTRAILS" thread

Another HotRails lover here! Got one in the bridge of my Warmoth Strat, it sings so beautifully!
