The Jerry Donahue...is it similar to the Twangbanger?

I really liked the Twangbanger when I had a strat, and I'm wondering if the Jerry Donahue sounds similar. They seem kind of close spec-wise.

Re: The Jerry Donahue...is it similar to the Twangbanger?

I haven't heard the Twangbanger, but I love the smooth sound of the Donohue. If I had a Tele, that's what I'ld use.

Re: The Jerry Donahue...is it similar to the Twangbanger?

The Jerry Donahue is not quite as bright as the Twangbanger, IMO, and seems to have more output and an even stronger tone. I love the JD in a naturally bright Tele...it fattens up the tone and gives a bright Tele a smoohter tone with alot more midrange.

That was exactly my impression when I listened to the SD CD's. The Donohue stood out as really being smooth and fat sounding.

ditto :)

I find the JD a little more vocal, due to its EQ, even though on paper, the TB has a little more resistance.
The JD would make a great strat bridge pickup, IMO. I know the TB is similar, and the guitars make for part of the difference, so I guess I should say, if you could get the same tone as a JD in a strat package, that would be terrific.

Curly, I'm putting a custom shop JD that MJ wound for me in the guitar that I removed the Noiseless pickups from. It's my '88 MIJ Squire and a previous owner routed it out for a bridge humbucker. A Tele pickup fits in there perfectly too so I had WD make me a new pickguard for it. I had a Fralin Blues Special tele pickup in it for a while, then pulled that set to try the Noiseless pickups. Anyway, I'll letcha know how the Jerry Donahue works out in that guitar. I'm going to use Antiquity Texas Hots or Surfers for the neck and middle pickups. Lew

th jd is my favorite tele bridge pup, fat tone with vintage character. if you like the twangbanger in the bridge of a strat youll probably like the jd in a tele

Totally! The only thing about the JD is that in some guitars with a very warm natural resonance the JD is not quite bright and sparkley enough. Usually though, it sounds fabulous to me.

Seymour says he built it to emulate the tone of the stock bridge pickup in JD's old '52 tele. As far as I know, Fender never used an alnico 2 pickup in a Tele. Regardless, the instant I plugged in my Tele with a JD it reminded me of the tone I'd been searching for, for the last 30 or 35 years: the tone of my '51 tele that I sold in the early 70's when the neck twisted.

What do you guys have to say about Seymour using alnico 2 to get that tone? Is it because alnico 2 sounds like degaussed or 50 year old alnico 5?

I'm pretty sure Fender never used alnico 2 but I admit that the JD does sound like the old pickup in my '51!

Re: The Jerry Donahue...is it similar to the Twangbanger?

I think Seymour's figured out a few things about Alnico 2 over the years!

when I first came on the forum, I felt a strat or tele pickup should be Alnico 5, like the old Fender pickups, but I've changed my mind. The Alnico 2 pickups I've tried have all sounded great - that included the APSs, JD, Antiquity for strat and tele, and Seths - and I like the less string pull/ more sustain aspect.

Lew,
you KNOW that custom JD will sound good with Antiquities or APSs!

I do expect it sound great! As for a2 in Tele and Strats: personally I like a2 for the bridge pickup but a5 for the neck and middle.

Re: The Jerry Donahue...is it similar to the Twangbanger?

Those are my two favorite SC pickups. I thought the Twanger was a bit raunchier but both have similarities. I think you would dig it.

Re: The Jerry Donahue...is it similar to the Twangbanger?

Here are two descriptions to kick around:

1. Imagine a mythical generic Fender-style SC pickup that is moderately overwound with alnico 2 magnets, then imagine that pickup made for a Tele (the JD) vs. a Strat (Twangbanger).

2. The JD sounds like a Tele pup, whereas the TB sounds like a Strat pup, but they have the same father.

I'll take one of each! :laugh2: I think that is probably an accurate description of each too.

Re: The Jerry Donahue...is it similar to the Twangbanger?

I want to also replace my stock vintage noiseless bridge pup in my 2003 American Deluxe Tele with the Jerry Donahue; mainly for the fatter and less bright sound. Does this mean I will not have a "noiseless" pickup anymore?

Re: The Jerry Donahue...is it similar to the Twangbanger?

yes, it will not be noiseless anymore, but if you play clean or with just some overdrive....its not a problem to me anyways......however, anything high gain and theres a problem with how much buzzing there is

overall, i will deal with the little bit of noise to get the authentic sound (which the noise is part of IMO)

Re: The Jerry Donahue...is it similar to the Twangbanger?

Hopefully Lew will post a big review about how it sounds in the bridge of his MIJ soon. An Alnico 2 pickup that is comparable to the TB. Looks like what I thought would be my future bridge pickup is being contested.
