The JMP-1 and gain...

Does anyone know if the JMP-1 can be modded for more gain? It gets me to almost the place I want, but lacks that almost over the top singing gain. I have new tubes on order for it that Groove Tubes say will bump the gain slightly, and I find pedals don't work well at higher gain settings.

Any Ideas?

Thanks!

Trevor

Re: The JMP-1 and gain...

don't mod a classic amp

just buy a new one

if you don't have the finances for that, sell it to someone who'll appreciate it

not trying to be mean but the JMP is a classic

Re: The JMP-1 and gain...

The JMP-1 that I have is a 1U Rack Preamp. Still in production.

I would never dream of modding a classic head. I have more sense than that.

Re: The JMP-1 and gain...

I borrowed a rack with one in it for the European Tour this spring. The sound was great for the band I'm with, but what do you mean modifying it for more gain ???

It already has even more gain than a cranked JCM900 SL-X !!!

Re: The JMP-1 and gain...

Holy crap why would you need "more gain" from one of those????

My friend has one and it has wayyyy too much gain already even with low output pickups...if you aren't getting enough gain out of it I think either you haven't figured out how to use it or there is something very very wrong with it!

Re: The JMP-1 and gain...

It has plenty of gain for most, but I like a just a tad extra so I can coax it into singing sustain that borders on controlled feedback. I have afeeling the tubes in mine are the originals. I'm waiting for my new ones to come it and that might solve it.

I was mostly curious, since most Marshalls can be modded in some fashion. It's good to know that it can and the Voodoo mod seems really impressive.

Re: The JMP-1 and gain...

How about just throwing a boost in front of it. It's non-invasive, and if you don't like boost A, you can always try it with boost B.

If you can't do that now, I don't think the "lack" of gain in a JMP-1 is to blame. Perhaps it's your technique, but let's assume it isn't. If I may ask, what do you use for a poweramp and speakers and pickups ?

Tubes in there should last a really long time, they should stay in place longer than a Frenchman living next to a brothel.

Besides, it's a hybrid unit and most of the distortion has nothing to do with tubes. Some "techs" even claim the tubes are only used in the clean channels.

For pickups I'm using :

DMZ D-Sonic (b) PAF Pro (n)
EMG 81 (b) 85 (n)
DMZ EVO2 (b) MegaDrive (n)
DMZ Super 3
DMZ Fast Track 2
Gibson Dirty Fingers
DMZ X2N

I also have a couple of Stockers in guitars that can't be changed because of my wanting to keep them original...

So I'm hitting the amp with a powerfull signal... Of course I run out of a wireless so that provides a bit of compression, but I can't hear a difference if I switch to a cable, and I have a very decerning ear...

The JMP-1 currently feeds into a Stereo DI-Box to balance the output into a Mixer that is set flat (And branched out to my recording system) and then it's output to a Peavey PV260 Power Amp the left side plugs into a Sunn 4x12 with Peavey Sheffield 1230 and Eminence speakers. and the right side into a Peavey Black Widow 118 Cab.

The date sticker inside the JMP-1 has a mfg date of some time in 1994. The tubes themselves look cheap and ugly...

I have been recomended by Groove Tubes to use the ECC83-S tubes which can squeeze a bit more out of the unit and open up the tone a bit.

Don't get me wrong, this thing sounds amazing, I'm just trying to replicate the tone I hear in my head :D It's close, but I need just a tad more. I get even closer if I run the unit clean or only slightly distorted and then hit it with either my DS-1 or my DriveMaster, but I'd ultimately like to be able to get the saturation just with the unit.

Re: The JMP-1 and gain...

My Suggestions:
- Put more volume
- Use delay
- Find a good position to get "good" feedback

.

Still doesn't work?
-Try the TriAxis

Re: The JMP-1 and gain...

USE A DELAY!

Using a quality delay unit makes a hell of a difference...my mate has a digitech delay that he uses with his marshall preamp and it sounds amazing...makes it sing and sustain all the way to the bank!

Re: The JMP-1 and gain...

Sounds like a decent stash of equipment you have there mate. :)

But are you have trouble getting a singing sustain and feedback on other equipment ?
If not, then there must be something really odd going on inside your JMP-1. If so, then I'm afraid it's you.

Remember, all the good gear only sounds as good as the guitarist who plays it.

I like to think so...

^ I was going to complement you, then I saw you have the same POS Behringer mixer I do! (props to WFD) AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! This whole time, I thought you had much better gear than me, and were worthy of my admiration! The house of cards has tumbled!

When I get my Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro, I shall look down my nose at you, peasant! :)

Re: The JMP-1 and gain...

Ah, but I have 2 of them. :)

I will be most likely be replacing one of them with a new Peavey unit with more XLR inputs.

I actually like the Bbehringer units because they are really transparent and they serve my purpose quite nicely. The Behringer DI's rock too and are much less expensive than any others.

I am contemplating retiring the AX2 or using it simply for clean work and I have grown tired of it's "metal" amp models and its distortion. Mind you, it's clean kind of lacks headroom...
