The Latest Acquisition (with pics and a stowaway)

Recent guitar and amp trades had left me with a chunk of disposable cash, so I turned it into a new (to me) guitar. It seemed to attract a little extra attention while being photographed yesterday...

Some kind of moth... I don't know the species... but it sure liked the way the neck tasted.

Is there a lepidopterist or entymologist in the house?

Eventually the moth got tired of rock maple and rosewood and moved on... Leaving me to get back to photographing what I had intended to in the first place.

That's two Music Mans (it's just weird to pluralize "man" as "mans" even if it IS correct in this case) in three weeks. I submit that this is a Duncan forum record.

So much for my "munckin hands" crack. Turns out I like EBMM necks so much I can't get enough of them. Despite the narrow(er) nut width, the neck profile is surprisingly (and refreshingly) chunky, especially for a super Strat -style guitar.

I'm not sold on the pickguard... Never cared for pearl. It may grow on me, though. If it doesn't there are alternatives.

I'm also not 100% on the humbuckers... The single is fine, but the humbuckers are DiMarzio Virtual PAFs wired with 250k pots and that's a little anemic even for me... I may drop some A8s in there and see what happens, but I suspect I really need a 500k volume pot. The guitar itself is quite balanced, resonant, and loud acoustically so I really believe it's just a matter of finding the right electronics to make it shine.

It plays very well and holds tune pretty well too, but I won't know if it's a keeper until after it gets the used-with-the-band test. I can say it's light, balanced, and super comfy on a strap.

I think this is it for gear acquisitions for the near future. Two EBMMs and a Splawn is probably enough for one month.

I'd be embarrassed by the spending if any of this had actually cost me anything... ;)

Oh hot. Should be cool once you get the vol pot thing sorted out.
Black is interesting for a guitar like that. What's the other one look like?

Re: The Latest Acquisition (with pics and a stowaway)

looks great! i've always loved the clip-lock straps, and black pearl pickguards on black MM's are perfect; guitar OR bass. nice guitar!

Re: The Latest Acquisition (with pics and a stowaway)

the red one looks cooler but I'm sure the black one would be more my type of features, good old h-s-h with a vintage style trem. I want a white one like Keith Richards

Cool guitar, have you thought of tortoise shell for a guard that can look good on black.

Re: The Latest Acquisition (with pics and a stowaway)

I had thought about tortoise shell, actually. It's not just black, though - it's kind of a metal flake black. Think a tort guard would still look good?

Also... you guys know what kind of music I do... If I do decide to change the humbuckers, they're gonna be SDs. What would you put in there?

Re: The Latest Acquisition (with pics and a stowaway)

1) You are OUT-THE-CONTROL

2) Tortoise shell on black flake, yeah, I think I would love that.

3) Duncans I can recommend: man, I have really, really been digging the P-Rails recently. It's P90 tone has grown on me a lot, it's just mean as ****. And the series humbucker sound is thick and a little closed sounding, which gives me more room on the tone knob, to dial in highs. I think it's a good rock pickup, and I love it.

Yes I know the colour they call it Sapphire black. I saw an Albert Lee in it with a tort guard a while ago and it looked hot.

Re: The Latest Acquisition (with pics and a stowaway)

I hate you. And everyone who has/can afford a Silhouette.

Re: The Latest Acquisition (with pics and a stowaway)

man i like both of 'em bot not as much as i liked your old SG...hah.

good goin tho man...what matters is if they're guitars that you'll use and play.

Re: The Latest Acquisition (with pics and a stowaway)

i keep lookin at the pickup config on the red one. First of all, wtf?, and second of all, i want it for my Strat.

Those guitars don't look like vintage PAF material.

The Hot Alnico 8 P-Rails? Custom? a PATB?

Don't know that I like pearl OR tortois on that black one. I've got some tortois and pearl guards on several of mine, but they really have to be the "right" guitars and colors to look good.

I have to agree with Immortal about P-Rails. Man, I'm just lovin' that P-90 sound. It's great for just about any style of music (maybe not metal, though). Plus the rail tone is very usable as well. Definitely give the P-Rails some thought. I'd probably stick with the standard P-Rails rather than the hot. The hot was a bit tricky for me to get to work in my LP, but it could be doable in the Music Man.

The Hot Alnico 8 P-Rails? Custom? a PATB?

I wouldn't touch those Hot P-rails with a 10-foot pole... waaay too much output for me. Maybe the normal ones, though...

The PATB is interesting also.

Thanks!

Thanks for the 'guard perspective.. That'll take some more thought.

As for P-90s for metal, well... someone around here seemed to get good results doing that... trying to remember...

Re: The Latest Acquisition (with pics and a stowaway)

Nice macro shots. I had to show my wife, because she's a butterfly fanatic.....she want's anything with a butterfly on it. I wish she could buy your guitar for me! lol

Re: The Latest Acquisition (with pics and a stowaway)

Thanks! I was happy to have gotten a couple of crisp, high-contrast shots of the moth.

I'm just using my wife's old Canon Powershot DSLR. It's only a 5-megapixel camera but it has a great lens for the price (about $400 new 5 or 6 years ago).

It's a nice guitar, too! I have the setup dialed in nicely now. I'll have my replacement pots (500k volume, 250k tone, custom taper) in a few days and might drop in the MJ-wound custom Lovebuckers I got from Lew in there. I think they're pretty low output so I might stick some A8 mags in 'em just to see. Could be special.

Re: The Latest Acquisition (with pics and a stowaway)

That's a very nice pair to have. When I see them, all I can think of is ''that's a couple of guitars for a guy that really plays, a working man's set of guitars.''

Awesome axes dude. Love the look of both. Btw, I like the pickguard on the black one.
