The LP Frampton project - desperate help needed!

Re: The LP Frampton project - desperate help needed!

Fair enough...I shouldn't have omitted anyone! Hamer, GuitarDoc...much thanks as well. Great forum here!

Next up - to decide what pups to use when I decide to replace the stock Epis! :)

Just a suggestion:

Neck: Pearly Gates(neck);
Middle: GFS Mean 90(neck);
Bridge: GFS Mean 90(bridge), or Pearly Gates(bridge), or AlnicoPro2, or '59(possibly with a UOA5).

The PG seems to be the *only* choice for a neck pup around here, eh? I like the sounds of it in all honesty, though. I kinda had that specced out already.

I like the idea of a P90 in the mid position. It might be a nice way to make use of that mid pup for something other than a blend or filler for the other two. That's a great call!

I would like to keep a true humbucker in the bridge...Seems people are pretty divided on the PG, though. Pros/Cons on the '59 over the AP2?

Can't really go wrong with the '59. If it is too harsh or mid-scooped in your guitar, a simple mag swap will cure it (UOA5, A4, etc).

Re: The LP Frampton project - desperate help needed!

I'm going to look towards a fat tone for the bridge pup. Smoother, but still with some nice low end balls distorted. I'm not afraid of definition, but I want to steer clear of 'harsh' or 'excessively bright'. If possible, I want to get into something without swapping mags out of the box.

It's probably going to be through a Marshall JCM ideally. Thoughts?

Back from the dead!

I wanted to revisit this thread to offer an update on things, and ask for a little more guidance in the pickup department.

Since the wiring harness and pots were replaced, this guitar has turned into a full-blown project. I took it upon myself to pick up Dan Erlewine's book (How To Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great), picked up a set of tools, and have been teaching myself how to properly set up a Les Paul. I'm also in the middle steps of tackling a body repair (a decent quarter-sized gouge on the front, right near the binding at the upper edge of the top.), and will be ready to go to lacquer this week. Pics will be on the way once the repairs are done.

The pickup specs have changed, thanks to a thoughtful XMas gift:

Neck: '59
Bridge: JB

Before I button this thing up, I need to spec and install the center pickup. That said, any thoughts, considering the changes? I'm still considering a P90 of some sort, but I'm really open for suggestions.

Thanks again!
