I use an SM-3n in the neck of a tele. It sounds great, just as described by SD. I don't mind the looks, but if I expected to see screw pole pieces I might feel a little different about it. The first one I tried did squeal, but SD replaced it with one that has been perfect. I guess I'd try wax-potting an original pickup that I liked otherwise if I couldn't find an alternative -- beats getting out the router by a long shot.

Wow that must have been dissapointing, good thing SD cares about his customers. Is the SM-3 real fat?
I won't route the body, I know I'll regret it later if I want to play more clean stuff.

I think the SM-3 comes as close as any pickup to falling in between, or melding, the tone of a Fender single coil and a PAF. It has a warm, full tone with a touch of HB compression, but also a touch of single coil articulation and texture. I wish there was a better selection of guitars that came stock with mini-HBs.
