The most organic sounding overdrive?

What do you, personally, think is the most organic sounding stompbox? Meaning an overdrive that has a very warm, natural sounding overdrive with character. Your thoughts?

Re: The most organic sounding overdrive?

My fulltone fulldrive 2 is gorgeous sounding. Can be absolutely massive too, through a cranked marshall.

Re: The most organic sounding overdrive?

Klon Centaur....but they're way expensive.

Go on Ebay and sort the pedals from highest to lowest, and you'll see the better ones come up. There's no definitive answer because all OD's react differently with different amps and guitars.....and music style.

The hard was to do it is buy and sell them for awhile till you stumble on your ideal ones.

The easier way is to go to a store with a big selection of high end OD's, and bring your amp. If you put the store through all that demoing, you'd better plan on dropping $200 that day.

Re: The most organic sounding overdrive?

Too many opinions on this matter, everyone has different ears, and tastes. Plus I'd go as far to say that there are too many choices as well, especially with the surge of boutique makers out and about these days. I have really gelled with a v1 Fulltone OCD pedal for a good while now. This one is very organic too my ears and needs. Others will discount it's tone, ability, transparency, etc... To each their own. For the longest time the consensus of many pointed to the Klon boxes. I have no experience to say yay, or nay. I do like the OCD better than an OD-1, and TS-9 as those tend to add colouration to your signal. Though for some instances I really like using a TS-9. I believe I've heard tail winds of either the TIM, or Timmy, dunno which one as a great unit for overdrive. I'm happy with what I use, and don't like to fish through these sort of things generally.

Re: The most organic sounding overdrive?

One day. I think that might be the pedal to trump my Fulldrive.

Actually, those are the 2 OD's I have on my board, and they're so different sounding that I can find a use for everything they do.

The FDII is like a big fat sounding tube screamer with a more mild mid hump.
It's got a nice bold and glassy sound.

The Klon just sounds like an extension of whatever amp you use, almost like you added an extra gain and volume knob. It adds a richer sound, and a bit of lower mids.

The easiest way to describe..... the FDII is like SRV and the Klon is like Robben Ford.

Re: The most organic sounding overdrive?

I have very little OD experience, but I gotta say my FD2 is awesome. I've played a TS-808, and Keeley modded Sparke Drive. Both were cool, but not my cup of tea.

Re: The most organic sounding overdrive?

Ulbrick 12AXE. Sounds like you've added another preamp tube to the front of whatever amp you plug it into. Recently purchased by both Larry Carlton and Robben Ford. Hand made by Dave Ulbrick. You can hear it on this track that I recorded from scratch to pay homage to the sound of Dave Gilmour and Pink Floyd, which I call "Floydy." This is Strat into Ulbrick 12AXE into Fender Super Champ. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=707451&songID=5393752

Cheers...............................wahwah

Re: The most organic sounding overdrive?

Whah,
you know I am planing to become a very rich man in the not so distant future, I think there is a price for that strat that you wont be able to say no to. That's the most gorgeous tone i've ever heard in that kind of style ......

Re: The most organic sounding overdrive?

I think the Arion Tubulator is an excellent choice for the money. Just don't stomp it too hard!

Re: The most organic sounding overdrive?

recently ive been really happy with my barber ltd running at 18v
feels like an extension of the amp

Re: The most organic sounding overdrive?

As of today, the best sounding OD I've played is one that is not on the market yet but has been shown at Summer NAMM and a few guitar shows this year. The Visual Sound Double Trouble. It's 2 TS808 circuits in one enclosure, like the J&H and Route 66. In fact, the Double Trouble is the OD sections of the J&H and Route 66. There's bass boost on both, you can use either one independently or both together. Very nice sounding, very smooth, and amazingly versatile. I sat and played with the DT for nearly an hour and did all sorts of stuff with it. It's on my "to have" list and may just end up on the floor in front of me next to the amp footswitch (only thing there now...lol).

Re: The most organic sounding overdrive?

i used to think the jeckle and hyde was one of hte best i've owned, and although it's very good, i must say that the ibanez 808 and 9 were more organic and just a tad better to my ears. with the j&h i can get close to where i want to go, but not quite there. same thing with the route 66, but that's just me. maybe someone else will have better success with it.

at the moment, i like to use both channels together around 12 o'clock. any more than that and it gets noisy.

Re: The most organic sounding overdrive?

I love the good ol' TS808. Mine's actually a clone, built to exact vintage 808 spec.

Yes it has the big midrange hump but that's what I LOVE about it.

I should add though that these sound like crap with some rigs and absolute tone heaven with others. I don't like it a whole lot with my Custom Agent, but it's amazing with my Epiphone with the Phat Cat in the bridge.

Edit: I have to say I have always found the only way to run a TS is with the drive on 0, regardless of where the level is set and if you're slamming the amp's front end or not.

The OD circuit in the J&H and the Route 66 is the same circuit so running those two together like that and having just both OD's on is essentially the same as the new Double Trouble. Thing is, you just need one pedal now instead of two AND the thing is dead nuts quiet. They also have a single OD coming out called the Route 808, single OD version of the Double Trouble, again, same OD as in the J&H and Route 66.

While I was fiddling with the DT and Route 808, I was talking with R.G. Keen, the designer of the pedals, and a DIY forum regular I've talked with since I began my own DIY ventures a few years ago. Knowing his knowledge level and expertise in the field, I know those circuits are done top notch.
