A battle of the Alnico II's. For reference, I will be putting a Custom Custom in the bridge. I'm leaning towards the Seth and have almost eliminated the PG. Select.

well, i have a CC/PG set in an alder/maple/ebony strat and it's a killer combo. the PG goes real well with a CC that i can tell you for sure.

I just put an A2Pro in the neck of my Dean Hardtail and it sounds killer. Very sweet and balanced but still clear and defined. Almost perfect. I have yet to meet the perfect pickup ;)

Re: The neck Les Paul pickup

Not mentioned and I'm not sure how it compares to the ones listed but the Gibson Classic '57 is a *great* sounding neck pickup IMO. Not so great in the bridge...but in the neck it's swell.

I have that in my Explorer! I like how it sounds.

Yeah, I heard it gets muddy up there at the neck. And I want lower output pickups in this paul for a creamy, vintage sound. And I'm not getting a deluxe... I tried to consolodate my list of guitars that I want as best I could.

Re: The neck Les Paul pickup

The Pearly Gates was MADE for a LP. Any other LP I get, ther's a Pearly going into it. ;)

Re: The neck Les Paul pickup

I have the aph-1n in the neck of my Standard and I love it. Very sweet and round sounding.

I have no opinion on the others because I dont own them.

I did try a sh-2n in the neck and although its a fantastic pickup it was just TO clear for my tastes in a Paul. The APH-1n isnt that radical of a change from the stockers.... just WAY better sounding overall but still retains that "Paul neck" tone.

Re: The neck Les Paul pickup

Alnico pro would be killer...

I wouldn't consider the 59n to go with the CC. Once I've mixed the 59n with an alnico II bridge and I didn't like the results. Both pickups had a great tone but I had to tweak the amp to get the best from both pickups. That maked that guitar a pain to play with a band, you don't have freedom to change pickups during a song.

Re: The neck Les Paul pickup

I have a slight preference for the Seth over the AII Pro - it's a little smoother. But you won't go wrong with either.

Haven't tried a PG.

It's strong,but muddy doesn't describe a 59N pickup! :smack: :newangel:

Re: The neck Les Paul pickup

I'd go with a 59. It's got THE classic singing LP tone...it can be muddy/boomy on certain Pauls and the all mahogany gibsons (no maple cap, like a V, Explorer, SG, etc)..but if you have a brighter sounding Paul, it cannot be beat (IMO of course).

Of those you listed I would go with the Seth. PG's are a little icepicky to my ears..like a JB, they have a high mid/treble spike that cuts through a mix well, but is unpleasing to my ears. The AP2 is pretty good as far as eliminating any "mud" or "boom" you may get with a 59, but for me it lacks character...very neutral sounding...almost too balanced or flat.
