Re: The New Dimarzio Paf 59 Set...

While i truly appreciate the tonal outcome based approach of Dimarzio (over construction-based obsession and bland variety), and the fact that production floor level DiMarzios tend to more often match their specified DCR upon delivery - it's super annoying how nearly every pickup (in its output class) is described with the same words except for the oddballs (EJ Custom, Bluesbucker etc). "Complex midrange", "tight bass", or signature artists wanting a "tighter bass" (why? but every DMZ pickup claims a tight bass lol), "sweet highs" (every pup from low to high gain of their claims to not be piercing or too trebly, and guess what, every strain of the green stuff claims the same). Grrrrrrr.

Re: The New Dimarzio Paf 59 Set...

I just saw that, thanks.

Moore has great tone, no doubt.

But I don't hear of a lot of forum members rushing out to buy B.B.'s 490r/490t pickups. Shame, cause his tone is the BEST. Ever.

Re: The New Dimarzio Paf 59 Set...

A4 '59's would be interesting, as they would be with RC UOA5's. Since Duncan has created new models by changing magnets (Jazz/A2P and the Custom series) maybe they ought to do this with '59's? There's been a number of members who've had issues with the sometimes boomy low ends of '59N's, and '59B's sometimes being overly bright & thin.

I run an A/4 in a 59b in the neck of my Explorer.. The low end was alil flubby initially, the A4 tightened it up just enough and shave just a smidge off the highs

Re: The New Dimarzio Paf 59 Set...

A set of these just arrived. Going to try them in my R9

Glad to see you around, man!

Can't wait to hear your impressions. I know you have quite a bit of experience with some of the older PAF-inspired DiMarzios :)

Re: The New Dimarzio Paf 59 Set...

I just dropped a set of WLH in one of my standards, and I don't know... I want to like them because you know...Page.

I have lost count on how many "PAF" pickups I have tried, and I have yet to find anything I love more than Antiquities. I was loaned a set of some Uber late '50's crazy money set of PAF knockoffs and was not impressed for the cost. Give me a Les Paul with some Duncan Ants straight into a Superlead, and I am done. I totally blame Jeremy btw...

My bench looks like a Les Paul factory exploded with 5-6 in various stages of work right now. The R9 was on the back burner until I could get a better look at the frets. I think I can squeeze one more level out of them, and I have reached my limit on stainless refrets and bound necks this month. I would post some pics for you guys, but Photobucket screwed us, and I have not bothered with new hosting yet.

There are a lot of people who try real PAF's....even 'good' ones.....who don't like them either. They are not like the modern low output pickups that typically make up the bulk of sales for people wanting that more vintage output.

Quite a few seem to think that when you spend more that the pickup will automatically (or magically) be just what they wanted in every detail. There tend to be lots of very disappointed people in this category - not the least because tone is individual.....but also that real clone PAF's are not what most players are actually after.
And also they are picky as to the guitar they are in too.

Re: The New Dimarzio Paf 59 Set...

That reminds me of something Dave Friedman said. We were talking about amps and people's assumptions about sound. Dave said whenever people say things "make it sound like a plexi," or "it sounds like a..." The first thing Dave ask them is, "how many real Plexis have you heard?"

The point is, of course, is someone like Seymour has heard more real '50's PAFs than all of us combined, and I will defer to him on what they are supposed to sound like.

Try imgur.com. You can setup an account, have galleries, etc., but it's totally free and driven by ad revenue.
