The 'Ol Speaker Cab In The Bathroom Trick

EXCITEMENT! : popworm:

So yeah, I'm (to borrow a phrase) chuffed. Our 24 yr old daughter has moved out into the adult world...
...which means I get my studio room again. I have been diligently moving my PCs and gear back and
cleaning like crazy.

So the first test will be to stick my speaker cab in the bathroom w/door shut; close mic'd with Marshall cranked.

I'll post the test results later... : popworm:

Re: The 'Ol Speaker Cab In The Bathroom Trick

So, what we've got here gear-wise:

===

superstrat with SH-5

Badgereffects Badgerplex Trilogy (true Echoplex preamp)

Marshall JTM45RI (I modded to be more Superlead-like - variac'd & slaved)

Fender '67 Deluxe

Avatar 1x12 w/ Celestion Alnico Gold

2x SM57 mics (one straight on cap 1" away, one 45 degree angle on cone edge 1" away)

DAW (NO EQing at all - reverb and delay added)

===

Now, the funny thing is, neither of those amps by themselves have the amount of gain as shown in the clips.
...only by combining both amps does it work (slaving). One of these days I'll do another vid and show this.

Overall, it was comfortably loud. Doing my Marshall by itself is much louder.

Anyhoo - on to the clips (noise). This will be Halenesque for two clips... other is just noise (wanking).

I have jokingly referred to these clips as "ToiletTone" since they were created right next to the john! :flush:

LLL - ToiletTone Little Dreamer

LLL - ToiletTone Jamie's Cryin'

LLL - ToiletTone Wanktacular

Re: The 'Ol Speaker Cab In The Bathroom Trick

Looking forward to checking these out.
Congrats on the room reclamation! I have ages before that happens. I finally got round to drilling two holes just outside our hall closet. With the door fully closed and on my Black Diamond shelf/GRAMMA, you cannot feel and can barely hear a thing!
Yay, I can record/reamp after sundown now! :)

Re: The 'Ol Speaker Cab In The Bathroom Trick

Hmm ... not a fan. Could be the cab's position in the room or the mic is getting some really nasty off axis reflections.

Re: The 'Ol Speaker Cab In The Bathroom Trick

Yeah...I feel like either some early reflections or a bit of phase issues going on. Just sounds too thin for what you describe

I see your doing something similar to the Fredman technique for micing. Love this technique and it is fairly easy to get into phase, but micro adjustments are still required.

I found this to be a huge help in getting my 2 sm57's in phase:

Keep in mind delay and reverb was added as well. Usually when I'm doing this type of VH thing I will put little to no delay in the left channel. I can hear lots going on over there too.

Re: The 'Ol Speaker Cab In The Bathroom Trick

Yeah it was a quick slap-dab... the problem is actually with the slaving setup; have to
get levels right especially the volume on the ISO lineout. When I normally slave,
I have it all lower volume. Turn things up and it changes everything. I can hear
constipation (pun intended) on the low end; that means too much signal being squeezed
into the next input. Strings are old, too.

Still, I can hear some nice warm tubey midrange.

Re: The 'Ol Speaker Cab In The Bathroom Trick

I found another culprit: the cap track was too hot. (booo)

Anyhoo, here's 4 clips - 2 dry (cone, cap), 1 combined (cone+cap+verb), 1 combined with EQ (cone+cap+verb+pinch of EQ)

For the combined, I added -20db of the cap track to give just a lil bite.

For the verb, I used a dab of Sunset Studio Echo Chamber iR in Waves iR1 Full.

Cap Dry

Cone Dry

Cone + Cap + Verb

Cone + Cap + Verb + EQ

(BTW, if you're doing 1st album, guitar is EMT140 plate panned right, with a dab of Sunset Studio Echo Chamber (used on master track)
in stereo)

Diggin' on that. The progression to the last one was really cool. You must be micing really close because I would have no idea that that was recorded in a bathroom.

Is it a tiled bathroom?

Yeah, the cap is 1" and the cone is 1" away mic-wise.

It is half carpet, half tile, but I didn't put the speaker cab in there to catch reflections - I wanted to crank it without blowing my eardrums out.
