'The Paul' is coming back

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

I saw that posted somewhere else. There is also a SG Special with P90's/dot inlays and an SG in Walnut Finish with TTop Replica's and small block inlays. I believe retail is $1499 on the Walnut finish SG, but I don't know what street will be. It's beautiful though. I was also hoping something like that would be a bit less expensive, but they are doing some nice things that don't cost $3500 like a 2019 "Standard", so I'd like to give them some credit.

It remains to be seen what they'll do with their core models like the Standard, Traditional, Custom, etc., along with the SG Standard/Custom, the 335's and others. If they can give us quality there at a more attractive price, it will be a huge win.

I'm not expecting $1800 new Standards, but a street price in the $2500 range would be great. That's basically a grand less than now. Also, I'd like to see more stores carry Gibson and for those stores to have a good selection of the catalog.

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

I'm not at all a Les Paul person, but (or possibly 'therefore') I like the looks of that above a regular Standard/Studio or whatever.

I used my first real paycheck to buy a nineties 'The Paul II," which was all mahogany with a thin body and tummy cut; a lot more comfortable than a regular Les Paul. It got sold after shuffling an army of pickups through it without being satisfied, and eventually having the neck joint go weird; got it fixed and was finished with it.

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

Cool axes. I've had a couple through the years. In fact, the first guitar I ever built back in '83 was basically a walnut The Paul with all the edges radiused and the neck joint molded. These should be big sellers, I think.

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

What if they made something that was kinda like a BFG The Paul? Take a The Paul, thin out the finish, remove the Inlays, put a P90 in the neck, and make the pickups wood mount.

I think that would be hella nice.

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

Very cool

I always wanted to get one

It feels strange to have the reissue be more than an original

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

$1400?

When even the promotional photo has a hideously mismatched 2-piece headstock....

Uhm yeah no thx, try selling it for $499

$1400 is MSRP, it will sell for less, and I'll probably pick one up once the used market is established for this model.

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

SG in Walnut Finish
Walnut finish SG

Walnut finish and made from walnut are NOT the same thing.

The old The Paul and the new The Paul are 100% walnut - even the neck.
The later The Paul II's were mahogany, then Gibson marketed them as Firebrands with the Gibson logo branded on the headstock.

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

I had one of the Firebrands in a natural finish. Mine had frets that were so low as to be almost unusable, but was otherwise a fine instrument… and one I have absolutely no interest in getting a new one of.

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

The Firebrands were cool guitars, too! It is sort of a 'not valued' period for Gibson, but hey, everything old is new again. And when you are out of ideas, mine the past!

Let's hope they don't read this thread, else they might reissue the Marauder and the S-1.

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

It probably isn't considered a cool guitar to own, but I do regret missing out on the M-III reissue from some years back. To me, that would be a far more usable guitar than any of their traditional offerings.

The reissue made some weird changes

The old ones can be found for reasonable-ish money. And play damn good --- for a Gibson...

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

I actually prefer the reissue when it comes to looks: the pickguard on the original always looked a little goofy to me. Apart from that, it looks like a great guitar, even though I don't really have a need for the middle pickup.

Re: 'The Paul' is coming back

And what looks like >$250 in upgrades alone... or were those installed by you?

How did it play?

The bridge and fine tuners came off an old RD Artist. The original pups squealed badly under high gain. I killed them good trying to wax 'em...guess I got the wax too hot. Oooops! The pups in there now I put in about 25 years ago...Dimarzio's. Evolution/Bridge Tone Zone/Neck.

Plays great. To my ears it sounds more like an SG than a LP. Great guitar for doing AC/DC covers!
