The pedals you need.....and those you think you need

We all know many EFX pedals end up on the used market. I bought a Vox Wah 10 years back and 99% of that time its been in its box. Delay is another one...interesting for a time. Tremolo has its place here and there..the odd bit of Flanging...it seems overall overdrive & distortion plus a good reverb are the main essentials to most songs/ instrumentals. Without Reverb an amp is dead. Many vintage amps did not have one .. One effect I would like to replicate is that on the intro to the song "If" by Bread sung by David Gates. This is going back to the early seventies and was done in the studio. not sure there is a pedal that can do that...?

For 80s music you will need a chorus

flange or phase shifter for VH style stuff

Fuzz for Hendrix or Corrigan

talk box for Frampton

Acoustic simulation for most nineties pop

I can do a gig with a Fender amp with reverb, but I'd like to have a boost, compressor, phaser and delay, too.

I like it simple....a Fuzz pedal paired with an Analog Delay (for soloing and some clean tone stuff).

My amp also has built in Reverb, which I always leave on just cause I like how it sounds.

I am totally fine playing without reverb . . . but NEED a delay pedal.

I like the Maxon AD -10 Analog Delay, it has nice full sound; but there are a lot of good delays out there to choose from.

ive played plenty of gigs with just a guitar and amp without reverb (5e3) i do like to have reverb on bf type amp though. i do the majority of my gigs with just an old deluxe reverb and an overdrive pedal. doesnt mean i dont like having three overdrives, a clean boost, an octave, a fuzz, two delays, a trem, and a rotosphere

I don’t know if you are looking for advice on how to achieve that tone from Bread or if you are looking for discussion, but....

Mine is a flanger. I always think I need it, literally never use it. Unfortunately UniVibe is a close second, but I actually do use it sometimes. Do I really need a Vibe AND a Phase shifter? Of course! ;) But in all honesty, only one is really needed live.

A volume pedal. That's not ridiculously sensitive. Audio taper?

The only pedal I ever owned that I didn't need or realy use was a wah pedal that was back in the early-mid 90's. Still don't own one today. Otherwise I never had anything I didn't use regularly and wasn't on my board at all times. I'm just not a gear hoarder or buy anything I don't need. :dunno:

I need to have an overdrive and phaser. I've played without one for a long time but after having one again, it feels like home. And I've had my share of phasers. I usually think I need a crybaby and in the last band I did but I'm not sure how much use it'll get with this current gig. It's on the board for now. I did buy a Boss DM-2W Delay and Keeley Compressor Plus. Those I did need for this gig to get what I want with my clean tones.

Wah!

I like my main amp's gain (Fender Bassbreaker 007), and I use my volume knob to clean it up. I don't really need time effects or modulation, but I absolutely need a wah for when I want to make my leads sing

If I'm not playing through my bass breaker, i.e. if I'm getting my dirt from pedals, I like having a treble booster into a tube screamer for my dirty tones (and a wah before the both of them, of course)__PRESENT

Distortion, noise gate, boost. Those are my pedals. Everything else I need (reverb, delay, chorus) I get from my amp. I'd like a compressor and maybe an EQ pedal at some point but they aren't absolutely essential.

I need OD, delay, noise gate.
but I also use very often: wah, chorus, distortion, tuner.
I think I need a Flanger.

Keeley MT-2 and Keeley Katarina. Original Keeley compressor.

For me, chorus and delay are the two big ones. Reverb is nice for practice but less so with bands. I use phasers and flangers every now and then, since I use multi-fxs where they are on tap in any case. A boost or two would be nice, but the JVM doesn't really need them.
