The Perfect Bridge Humbucker??

Re: The Perfect Bridge Humbucker??

All 3 customs are a PAF on steroids but, they own flavor of a PAF on steroids.

For the perfect bridge bucker, its a hard call between a jazz bridge or a PATB-3.

i'm curious to know, what does a jazz bridge sound like?

Re: The Perfect Bridge Humbucker??

well if your still getting too much high end after you install it, you can raise the pickup and lower the screws, or even try an a8. there's also lower pot values. will you be installing a tone pot?

no im just going to leave it with a single volume pot. Ive heard of guys putting in the CC, still having too much highs, so they flipped it around with the screws towards the neck. Or i think the volume pot is a 500, so i could change it for a 250

your on the right track: popworm:*pop goes the toneworm*:D

Re: The Perfect Bridge Humbucker??

what PAF "flavor" does the CC have?

well, since it's the a2 version of the custom, it's got the warm, mid-biased flavor. the duncan custom has a brighter, tighter voicing with it's ceramic magnet, and the C5 is also tight and bright, but in a more organic fashion without as much output, and is a little toothier than the ceramic version.

even thought it has an A2 mag, but i hot coil wind, will it still have a goos clean tone? the stock pickup in the baretta (gibson's version of a JB) has on A5 mag and is wound to around 16k and the clean just doesn't have any character to it. When i play clean, the sound is still a little overdriven. Even the distorted tones are just lifeless.......no tone

ah well there's your problem! i never gelled with the jb's cleans(i know it's not a jb but just go with this) the jb seems to have a ton of mids, but it's got a characteristically scooped magnet, depending on how you hear it. some ppl say it has more highs and lows, some ppl say it lacks mids. anyways, it's not very balanced in the mids imo, and it's very honky, but in an off manner. i stuck an a2 in mine and it worked wonders. despite the fact that a2 is supposed to be more midsy, it got rid of that mids spike allowing it to clean up well, and smoothed out the distortion. i'd say, before you try the CC, experiment with an a2 mag in your current pickup, you might like the results.

edit: and yes, the CC can clean up, very well in fact. when i tried out that washburn idol, i was riding the volume knob alot.

in fact, i'd like to add the JB2 to my list of perfect bridge pickups!:D

oh, and chris! another thing to consider if your guitar still turns out too bright,
if you've got the room inside of your kramer's cavity, you may want to hook up a tone pot anyways. you don't have to drill a hole or anything, just leave it inside your cavity and leave it full up, it'll trim off some highs too.

Re: The Perfect Bridge Humbucker??

I don't think there is a perfect bridge bucker.

Sure theres bridge humbuckers perfect for particular styles but I can't think of one humbucker that has the balls of a Distortion/Invader style pickup but with the cleans of a PAF or single coil. That would be my perfect Humbucker. The closest I've found so far is the Alt 8 but the cleans would have to be better for total perfection.

if you want, you could try something in the paf-range and put an alnico8 in it, it might strike a good balance for what your looking for.

Re: The Perfect Bridge Humbucker??

Sorry - DiMarzio Tone Zone.

I know that there's a lot of haters but in my opinion that pickup does exactly what a humbucker should do. It's big, fat and warm with plenty of output. If I want something that's more cutting and dynamic I go with vintage correct single coils.

Re: The Perfect Bridge Humbucker??

+1

While the Tone-Zone is FAR from being my favorite HB, it would be my choice for a "desert island all styles of playing" humbucker. Whenever you have a gig where you need a fat humbucker, the TZ will deliver a solid output and feel and is absolutely huge sounding. Plus, it sounds good through pretty much anything and is not too picky on the guitar it's installed in.

For my needs, however, there are better choices out there IMHO.

Re: The Perfect Bridge Humbucker??

well thats good to hear. I have no idea why kramer decided to make the body's of the reissue out of solid maple?!?! :poed: the highs that come out that guitar are like razor blades against a chalk board

Because the very early C serial# hockey stick ones, think EVH around 84-85, were made of maple and they are generally regaurded as the holy grail of the Berettas. I like my Holoflash Beretta2 in alder better.

My choice for the do it all, sounds good in anything HB is the Super Distortion. Big,fat, warm with lots of chunk. Fattens up any icepick tone turd you may have.

Re: The Perfect Bridge Humbucker??

You can put in EMGs if you want all your guitars to sound the same.

Re: The Perfect Bridge Humbucker??

I think the perfect bridge humbucker depends on the tone of a specific guitar.

Having said that. My perfect pickup in a Les Paul has been the BroBucker. Take a 59b and give it a little more of everything. That's the BroBucker.

I went for the CC because i heard it was supposed to be a custom HB for EVH in the 80's.....but then he left kramer and seymour duncan and went to ernie ball. and i wanted something with PAF tone, but hot wind. something i could use for sweet blues, classic and hard rock

Re: The Perfect Bridge Humbucker??

There can't be a perfect humbucker, UNLESS you only ever play one specific, tightly defined type of music. IMO.

I like all the pickups I have for different reasons. My favourite is probably still the JB, but I wouldn't swap the others I have for more JBs, cos I like a bit of variety.

Re: The Perfect Bridge Humbucker??

the perfect humbucker is the one that sounds best in your guitar with you playing your style of music into your amp. in my les paul special thats a pearly gates.

Re: The Perfect Bridge Humbucker??

I REALLY like the Custom. I bought it to go into a Fake Les Paul designed primarily for metal, punk and other loud aggressive music, but was surprised to find that it actually had a lot of versatility. It had exactly the tight chunky chugging sound I wanted for palm-muted riffing, but it also cleaned up well for early 80s new wave stuff. Surprised the hell out of me, but it did it. Running through a chorus and a super clean amp, I was doing Smiths and Cure stuff on a guitar I built to cover thrash...
