The quest for a good Heavy Metal tone

Re: The quest for a good Heavy Metal tone

I can tell you one thing to do to make than Bandit a lot better. Put in an EV12L.
That said, I don't really care much for Bandit amps, except for Nostalgia. I want to have one for some reason.
The bigger amps, with the tube power sections, like the Classic VTS are solid Country Twang amps, and also get a brutal crude distortion.

Re: The quest for a good Heavy Metal tone

The truth is you might not be able to get a monster heavy metal sound with that setup, so just ignore people who are telling you to sell everything you own.

I think if you play around with your Boss ME8 you should be able to find some sounds that suit your purposes. I've never had the chance to try one out but as I understand it a lot of the same circuitry from the Boss pedals is in that box, so if you can some of the heavier distortion models you should be well on your way. I used to have a MT-2 Metal Zone that was great for a bedroom heavy metal tone.

What if you put the ME-8 through the Behringer head and cab? You might be able to get what you want with that cab pushing air. Just experiment with the distortion models and settings and you can at least approximate something that puts a smile on your face.

Classic Heavy Metal (Metallica, Maiden, Anthrax etc.) is basically all tube amps (with certain distortion/overdrive pedals at times), so getting close to any of those tones with your setup would be a real challenge I think. The guitarist in one of my previous bands did use a Boss multi FX in combination with a Marshall VS100 and was able to get some heavy sounds that recorded great.
Like Metalman said, just experiment and you'll find your thing (or what you might be lacking).

Re: The quest for a good Heavy Metal tone

my combos and other guitarists combos are more than loud! if high airy sounds is what you need, it will deliver that. if you want HEAVY chug your gonna need a 212 or 412 and at least 50 watts of a head of metal caliber; a 5150 and no name cab is just as expensive as the rig you named and you will be respected when you gig heavy metal!!
