First off, thanks to everyone who contributed to the poll. As I've mentioned before, it's no easy task trying to come up with five favorite guitarists, let alone rank them. Still, I think it was a fun challenge for everyone involved.

Secondly, let me say I hope you all don't hate me for pulling a fast one on you with the phony Top 20 list. I need to have a little fun on April Fools' Day. You were good sports about it, and even given that fake list, a lot of people came up with strong arguments for why so-and-so should or should not have made the list. At a minimum, it was an interesting sociological experiment. (I will admit that a small handful of members were in on the gag, but I will not reveal their names.)

Lastly, I'd like to remind everyone that this is a culmination of votes for favorite guitarists, not best guitarists. It's a representation of the opinions and tastes of a small sample of forum members. (I received ranked votes from 194 forum members, with a total of 290 unique guitarists counted.) I did my best to include as many people as possible in a short amount of time.

What follows is a list of the top 75 guitarists, as favored by the SDUGF. I could list more, but as you get further down the list, you get a lot of three-, four- and five-way ties. (There are, in fact, 77 guitarists represented in the list, but the last three -- #75, #76 and #77 -- were actually in a tie, so I had to include all three.)

Again, this is the real list -- no Willie Nelson here. Take time to read through it, find where your picks landed, then have a fun discussion about the results. Thank you, everyone!

Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

YOU BAR-STEWARD!!!!! Ha ha ha nice one, I had my suspicions but has you obviously put ALOT of effort into it I didn't want to offend. Great gag and cool idea for a poll! Glad your back... you F*$£er you.

Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

The guitarists are ranked using a weighted scoring system. A guitarist voted #1 in your list received five points, #2 received four points, and so on. The Ct. column represents how many votes the guitarist received, and the Wt. column represents the weighted ranking. Just for fun, I put the Rolling Stone ranking from their "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" article at the end, under the RS column. (We all have our opinions about that article, so it should make for some good banter.)

For ties, where the Wt. and Ct. scores matched, I used how many #1 votes the guitarists received as tie-breakers. If it still was a tie, I used the number of #2 votes, and so on. As you can see from the list, there still are a few ties. That's OK in my book.

The list follows in the next post.

Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

The top 7 are no suprise, but Tony Iommi at #8 ????
I don't get that one.

Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

****, i was had in the other thread.

3 of my top 5 are in the top 75 (52, 32 & 64 respectively).

With Hendix & Page as 1 & 2 it shows how many old bastards we have on the board. Lol.

Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

Hmmm . . . not a single one of my choices made the list . . .

Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

Great list, great work, thanks man.

One of my dudes didn't make the top 75! Where's Brent Hinds? :)
I'm happy to see the rest of my favorites up there, though. My list follows:

1. Mike Campbell
2. Kim Thayil
3. Alex Lifeson
4. Mikael Åkerfeldt
5. Brent Hinds

It could probably still change by day with an exception or two.. Jerry Cantrell almost edged Thayil, but I had to give Kim the nod for the more innovative work. I guess I've been feeling pretty proggy lately!

BTW, if you want the full list, PM me and I can email it to you. (I have it in an Excel spreadsheet.

For the sake of privacy, I will remove the individual forum members' names from the matrix I used.

Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

I'm kinda surprised that all of the guitarists I voted for are in the top 25, especially Adam Jones and Jerry Cantrell. I'm also surprised both of those guys are ahead of Dime on this list, who was my #1, and I thought he'd be higher on most people's lists. Great poll, though. Thanks for taking the time to do this, man. I'm sure everyone who participated appreciates it.

My list was:

1) Dime (He was the one who inspired me to pick up the guitar, so he has to be #1)
2) Adam Jones
3) Jerry Cantrell
4) Paul Gilbert
5) Jimi Hendrix (Though, I wish I would've put David Gilmour here instead, but I'd totally forgotten about him... )

I can't beleive it... Buckethead scored higher than Dave Mustaine?!?

Cool prank bud...

Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

Here's my top five:
  1. David Gilmour
  2. Joe Perry
  3. Jimmy Page
  4. Tony Iommi
  5. Trey Anastasio
I came very close to putting EVH at #5. Could've gone either way for me.

Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

That list looks much more sensible to me. No surprises.

Mathias, Robbo and Scotty G didn;t make the list for me.

Re: The REAL List: SDUGF's Favorite Guitarists

Did anyone vote for Brad Delson btw?

1,000 lashings for anyone who did!!!!
