The saga is over... I have a working rig!

So after blowing up my 2x12 through a freak accident (which I only have a theory for what happened) and getting royally screwed on a bad ebay deal for a Marshall 4x12, dropping a hundy to rent a weak-sounding JCM800 halfstack, I pooled up as much money as I could, sold a few things, and bought this:

Yep... I have a full-on Legacy halfstack now. Loaded with Vintage 30s. Loud as all get-out. Sounds SO good. :smokin:

Big, fat, loud, powerful, smooth, liquidy, player-friendly feel, lotsa harmonic saturation, man I LOVE this amp!

From listening to Vai and reading people talk about it, I think the Legacy is pretty much my dream amp. Now to just get $900 more somehow :laugh2:

Re: The saga is over... I have a working rig!

Bastard with your matching cabinet sounding good. :laugh2:

Glad you finally found something you like, man! That was one string of bad luck that really blew.

Take a look on ebay for a used in in good condish. The heads go for $5-600 used, sometimes less!

It's not a marshall and its not a Fender... it's a wonderful sounding amp in its own right. The only thing I'd recommend for users of these would be to replace the stock tubes and to use an attenuator. The EH power tubes are alright but the Sovtek pres don't do much for the sound. Slap some GT12AX7R's or JJ's in there and the sound improves a LOT. And this amp, even on the 50W setting is loud as hell, so get a Dr. Z Airbrake and tame that sucka cuz even if you play venues big enough to feasiibly use 1/2 stacks in the sound is still massively powerful and could easily overwhelm your other bandmates if you're not careful. And a cranky soundman is not fun to deal with. I've gotten zero complaints or "turnitdowns" from soundmen since I started using the attenuator... love it!

I've got a Legacy 2x12 cab coming by the end of the month. Tested it with a Mesa Dual, and sounded awesome.

And my cello has made it to the picture.

Copycat. :laugh2: Seriously that cab was a fricken steal.

HEY! Lets mic the cello and put it through the Legacy! Whaddya say?

Re: The saga is over... I have a working rig!

Cool amp! I have had gas for one of them for a while now......

PS-Is that MIM Standard in the front of it?

No. It WAS an MIM Deluxe Series Powerhouse Stratocaster that looked exactly like the one you see HERE. I gutted the electronics and dropped a Sharp Concepts diamondplate aluminum pickguard loaded with three Hot Rails pickups in it. 5-way blade switch, master volume, master tone. That guitar has some SERIOUS crunch and grind.

Re: The saga is over... I have a working rig!

CONGRATS on your new rig!!!!
NEW STUFF ROCKS!!!!
Happy shreddin!!!

Re: The saga is over... I have a working rig!

I LOVE the looks of the Legacy head and cab.
I was this close --> <-- to pulling the trigger on a Legacy, but I must've caught someone on a bad day; worst customer service EVER. The guy I spoke to was rude and sounded like he couldn't be bothered talking to me.

Re: The saga is over... I have a working rig!

That is a great looking rig! Congrats! :fing2:

4x12s rock. I hadn't owned a 4x12 since 1980, until I recently acquired one with my '77 JMP 2204. The depth and projection is fantastic! I've played three gigs with that rig now and I love it. The first gig was frustrating because I couldn't crank the amp enough to get the power tubes cooking - so I bought a Hot Plate. Played two gigs this weekend with the 2204, 4x12 and Hot Plate. Awesome!

Bet that Carvin rig with the Airbrake is awesome too! :D

Re: The saga is over... I have a working rig!

congrats B2D...that is a nasty looking rig!!!

Re: The saga is over... I have a working rig!

Man, I remember asking about the Legacy a year back and I only got a handful of (good) responses from people who have tried them out, but no owners. I may reconsider picking one up in the near future...now that there's a bonafide Legacy owner on the forums! Congrats!

Re: The saga is over... I have a working rig!

I've always thought it looked so much better to always have the matching cabinet, rather than mismatched brands.

Have you tried the V3 yet? I haven't, but I wonder what the tonal differences will be, between the Legacy and new V3.

They've come a long way from the original Carvin heads.....the X100B's.
I like how you grabbed my story for your signature. If you're wondering why I destroyed the head rather than selling it.....it's because, not only did it sound like junk, but it always had intermittent switching problems I couldn't figure out. Everytime someone came over to buy it, it'd start acting up, so I just lost my cool and swung it around and smashed it to pieces. I only paid $150 for it anyway.

Yeah I took the V3 for a test drive a few weeks ago. It's VERY different from the legacy. Imagine a triple rec with MUCH better EQ, a tighter sound overall, and a better clean channel. It basically "fixed" all my complaints about the Mesa Triples. I'd really suggest going to Hollywood and trying one out... it's a beast! I like my legacy more because the tone is more organic, fatter, and more my style but hey I wouldnt mind a V3 in the wings.

Xeromus has one, too. I think maybe one or two other people do too. If you ever get a hold of one make sure the tubes and the cab are of good quality... this amp is pretty sensitive to what preamp tubes it's running.

I'm not gonna say it's a Bogner on a budget, but I LOVE this amp... I've never been so happy with my straight-amp sound as I am with this one.

Having dealt personally several times with the staff of the Santa Ana store and speaking on the phone a few times to their CS reps and techs, they've been nothing but nice to me and went the extra mile in every sense. I'd give 'em another try and make sure they know what happened the 1st time.

Re: The saga is over... I have a working rig!

I put JJ preamp tubes in mine and it improved. Haven't changed the power tubes yet.
