The Screamin' Demon

When I get my Explorer back from my guitar technician it will have a Custom 5 in the bridge with a Screamin' Demon in the neck. I've been listening to Lynch Mob albums like Sun Red Sun on YouTube and George gets a really nice sound.

Maybe a dumb question but is that what the Screamin' Demon really sounds like? It's awfully good!

I'm almost thinking of buying another one and putting in the bridge if the Custom 5 doesn't work out.

If your amps are most of the way there, sure! The name has always been a misnomer as the uninitiated think it’s gonna be some high-output gain monster, but it’s medium output which is great for clarity. I don’t know exactly what George used back then but you can bet he’d want “his sound” in the pickup. It’s a great choice. It’s like a “‘59 on steroids.”

I don't think of it as a "59 on steroids". To my ears it doesn't have the scooped mids or boomy bass as much as the 59. If anything, I hear it more as a Jazz on steroids.

That’s just how it’s described and I can hear what they mean. Definitely differs from guitar to guitar, amp to amp. I don’t find my ‘59 neck scooped or boomy in my flying V. Does neck leads beautifully and gets the “spank” I like clean with the inner coil tapped with the inner coil of my DD.

I could switch for a jazz, but the ‘59 is what it came with, I love it, so there’s not a lot of point.

I’ve loved the jazz in some guitars and not others (in an LP style Ibanez it’s one of the most lush, sparkly hi-fi cleans I’ve ever heard. I might switch out the PAF Pro I have in there for it) If you like it, trust your own ears. I think a Demon is up your alley.

I experience the same with my Duncan Designed '59 set in my Sycamore Daisy Rock. I like the DD set better than the USA models.

If you take a 59 EQ curve on a piece of paper, and rotate it so the highs are higher, and the bass lower, that's how I think of it. The PG is the same, just not as much.

Consider the mids to be the point of rotation. They stay put while bass gets closer to them.

The Full Shred is the Jazz on steroids, IMO.

as less bass more highs go, with a PAF style - and they get hotter 59 to FS. Yes? No? Maybe? That's how I see it. YMMV

I’ve gotten lucky exactly once on Duncan Designed. The rest, not so much unfortunately.

If the SD / Custom 5 combination doesn't work out, here is a suggestion.
Try a Jazz bridge in the neck and move the SD to the bridge.

Yeah. They can be hit or miss. I've been fortunate. I've only got good ones.

You could make a pretty penny flipping Duncan Designed that actually meet the standards of the real thing if you have enough for less. I’d buy up your detonators.

Well, I don't have Detonators. I have DD 59's, Hot Rails, Lipstick tubes, and a couple JB/Jazz sets. They all sound outstanding.

To me, the Screamin Demon is pure Heaven in the neck position of a Les Paul. .
I put in a Triple Shot pickup ring in with the Screamin Demon. .
I sounds totally like a Single Coil and when I do Diary Of A Madman with my band, it sounds exactly like an acoustic guitar.

The Screamin Demon is great , also on S, S, H Strats. Especially , when the single coils pickups in the neck and middle are vintage spec.

I tried a Jazz in the neck of one of my guitars many years ago and I found it to be too clean and sterile for heavy metal.

I just put a Jazz in my Jackson DXMG with a Floyd. Clean yes. I don't find it sterile at all. And it works perfectly with the amount of gain and distortion that I use playing metal. Which is on the more extreme side. Of course I tend to use it more for playing clean or slightly boosted. The thing sings and sustaining a single note results in lots of higher order harmonics. It also responds well to the tone knob (500k pot 0.47mf cap).

I love the Jazz for all applications. Great for cleans, great for high-gain lead work. I also agree that it responds well to the tone knob. You can get smooth tones with tone around 5 or go bright and crisp with the knob dimed to cut through the mix.

I don’t think he’s using the Demon on that record. If you want to really hear it, listen to the second Lynch Mob record.

The Demon is one of my favorite pickups, neck and bridge. I like the harmonics, the clarity, the fact that it’s not a fire breathing pickup but it has enough to get the goods.

I have it in the neck and bridge of one of my Strats. Great pickup in either position. And it loves high gain amps.

I think the Demon is amazing, especially in the neck. Also, I agree with the suggestion of Jazz bridge pup in the neck...to me, it just "works".

I've only had a couple of Duncan Designed. One of them was the Demon equivalent and it sounded great! I think one of them was a 59 equivalent which I actually liked better than the "real thing".
