From my understanding, Fender changed over to rosewood fingerboards after Leo Fender saw all the wear that was showing on the maple fingerboards.
I find it odd that people would mention tone when comparing fingerboard wood. I'm sure there is a difference (changing anything is changing something), but it would be so miniscule to barely be noticed.
