"Strat" as in Fender HM Strat? They were da bomb! Great quality instruments with decent pups. But because they are so closely associated with heavy metal they aren't really taken seriously. Strange 80's rock finishes and neon colors. You can usually get a great used HM Strat for a fraction of what they were new. Everyone I know who has one loves it and everyone I know who sold theirs wish they had it back. I'd love to find one for myself.

I think Fender came out with two versions of "The Strat." You may both be right. Frankly, I wouldn't want either, but I'd rather have the one in Lew's link than the one that came out in the late 80's in pink and turquoise, and a bunch of other sick colors. Greg Howe was the only known guy that used those. It may be why he disappeared so quickly! Ha Ha. The other one looks like an Elite with normal electronics.

I actually have to agree with Lew on this one - both variations were hideous (in looks) and took Fender away from what they were supposed to be good at doing. But if you know how the company was so far off the market and had taken both eyes out then its not suprising!!
The guitars were associated with the HM crowd and if my memory serves me correctly because of all that brassware it changed the whole tonal characteristics of the guitar. However at that time a lot of folk were into brass and were wanting that warm sound :fing25:

Yep, I've got one of these in the same color as the one in the link (the one with front and back pictures). Mine says 'Made in USA' on the asymetrical neck plate.
For those of you that haven't played one of these, they're GREAT rock axes. I traded one of my Ibanez USA custom guitars outright for my HM strat...the tone of the HM is smoking. It's the only guitar I used for hard rock since I bought it in 96 or so...that is until the Wolfgang came along.
Don't knock these too hard until you've tried em...

y'all are wrong..i have an 82, and it is an awesome guitar- no heavier than current Strats- owned it since 82 as well, so i spent a lot of time with it. brass bridge, 9 way pickup switching (all 3 in series, outside 2, etc). Much better sounding than any current Am Std Strat I've played- and I teach in a music store, so I have played a lot. Much better than the Elites or the Stds they came out with a year later.
