The sword/baroness tones

I've really gotten into these two bands as of late so I'm tone chasing just a little. I have researched and I know Pete uses mostly what he can get while out in the road (boss/mxr/Dunlop). John however leans more toward high end boutique and often switches up his board for ever tour. I love the ambient delay/chorus sections of songs like march to the sea and chlorine and wine. Then you are slapped head long into a wall of fuzz.

The sword on the other hand doesn't have as much of the ambience up til the last couple albums. Which I absolute am hooked on. High country and purple brought me into this realm of music. So my question is this... I'm looking at how to get close to these tones. Not duplicate spot on. Just in the ballpark.

Current rig->

ESP eclipse ->boss tuner->Chicago stomp works Rams head-> me black dark echo ->Randall rx75

I have a Chicago stompworks Proco rat clone and a Russian green tall font clone on order. I'm hoping these can get me close. Im open to all suggestions thoughts. Especially if u wanna
Turn me on to another great band.

Re: The sword/baroness tones

I've seen a bunch of pics of John's pedal board and was about 3 feet from it when they were in SLC, but I can't remember what's on it, bunch of boutique stuff. I think he had 2 strymon delay pedals, a philly fuzz pedal, and some stuff I didn't recognize. He played it through a princeton reverb and mic'd through the PA, it was huge sounding. Get on his instagram and FB, he has/does post pics

Re: The sword/baroness tones

Youtube had a rig rundown with Kyle and JD from The Sword, but I think that was for Apocrypha, maybe before. I haven't picked up High Country yet, but from what I'm hearing of their older work (Apocrypha, Warp Riders, etc) I'm hearing fuzz pedals for sure. Couldn't say what amps. THey did have the one Sabbath-style video for How Heavy THis Axe where they were using Oranges, but then it was supposed to be an homage to 70s Sabbath and Deep Purple videos (of whatever TV show that was - Top of the Pops or something).

I'm not hearing anything definitively "Marshall" though, so I'm guessing Fender with pedals and maybe a Boogie Rectifier.

I found this hike searching. I contacted philly fuzz and basically the only way to get one is from a show. Problem is they are t coming anywhere near me. So, that leaves me searching for other fuzz. I've tried to cover the ground by getting a Rams head and a Russian.

Re: The sword/baroness tones

I've been watching some live YouTube and jd is still using
An orange and his main distortion was a bogner red pedal. Kyle had this BIG knob amo that was cool and was running a simple
Boss ds1. On older albums I hear fuzz as well but according to vids he used a metal muff back then. So that's where the rat clone comes in. Plus it cover a lot of ground outside just what I've bought it for

Save your $$ and sell off the stuff you don't need. It's worth it

John is for sure a pedal enthusiast. He's using Fender Princetons this time around for the tour. He used the philly fuzz extensively for the Purple Album. If you dig through the band's IG, you be able to find mini "rig rundowns" of his board. I have a PF Heretic (ironically not playing any Baroness through it), but I don't see why you couldn't milk an EH Big Muff. The Heretic itself is pretty versatile; makes for a good low gain fuzz actually.

This is his other fuzz pedal. He claims to have used it on all their albums since Blue

Did a little digging for ya (can't sleep). He seems to like this pedal. TYM Overdrive Preamp 666; it's essentially a modded DOD 250. It's also in that pic of his board you posted. Maybe you can get one customized? Forum member Guitarfeak runs a pedal mod service through the trading post. He does great work.

More shots of his board. Good luck

Re: The sword/baroness tones

I remember watching a The Sword rig rundown not that long ago and it wasn't boutiquey at all. Something like a big fat fuzzy doomy amp a la Orange Thunderverb or something with a DS1 in front.
But I could be wrong.

I don't think those big "stoner-ish" heavy tone are that hard to, at least, get in the ballpark.
Some high output passive pickups, a SG/LP/EXplorer of some sort and the forementioned pieces of gear, plus some fuzz, llots of volume and you'll be 80% there, the other 20% being in your hands and usage.
You don't wanna go all tight a la Zakk Wylde and use EMGs and a SD1. You need the tone to be slightly sludgy and loose. That's where the fun lies.

Re: The sword/baroness tones

I'm currently running a Randall amp with a Cantrell wah, Rams head clone, Russian tall font clone, and a mr black dark echo delay. So far I'm getting some really good sword tones. I haven't tried baroness yet but I thank you for all the research. I wanted the philly fuzz but you can't order it directly. You gotta get it from a show:( that truly sucks. So instead I chose to try the Russian tall font. Right now I'm trying to get it replaced because it's got a short somewhere near the power input. It will work off a battery but not a power supply. Makes no sense to me. I've looked it over and over and can't figure where the fault is.

Re: The sword/baroness tones

^ Guitarfeak runs a pedal repair service here on the forum/trading post. I would hit him up for a quote. He does clean work and is super helpful. I've had a couple pedals repaired/modded by him.

As for the philly fuzz pedal, keep pestering them if that's what you truly want. Having been in contact with them, I know that they can ship you a pedal if you can't make the show. $165 shipped to ya.

That micro terror in the link is a great deal btw.

Re: The sword/baroness tones

I may have to hit him up cause as of right now the builder is not answering me via email about replacing the pedal.
