The things that should NOT be DONE

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

When it comes to gear, never assume. Don't assume a solid-state amp will suck because it's solid-state, don't assume a MIM Strat will suck because it was made in Mexico, don't assume a 100-watt Marshall stack will make you sound like Angus Young because that's what he used.

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

Shredding with reverb? That should be clear as mud.

It helps to distinguish between practice and rehearsal.

Practice is what you do on your own to prepare for being with the band. This is when you LEARN your part.

Rehearsal is playing with the band in preparation for a gig. Rehearsal is when arrangements are finalized.

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

i think putting a pod in front of a good tube amp is pretty stupid. if its a ****ty tube amp with ****ty distortion, thats cool, but it just proves how many people buy tube amps, just to say they have one.

i also know a guy who has a flextone III and puts a POD in front of it. i didnt want to tell him how stupid i thought that was.

That or a Boss GT-8 infront of a 5150 and use the MT-2 setting on the GT-8 and not the natural tone of the bloody Peavey !

KIDS these days !!! :wrf:

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

1: Using reverb live... It kills the sound.

2: Buying a tube amp just to say you have one.

3: Only using boutique because it is "in". :)

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

never let non-contributing people be in the jam space during writing mode.

my old band's bassist would bring his kids and girlfriend into the studio during writing, and next thing you know, his 10 year-old kid and his girlfriend would chime in with how they think things should sound, and start shooting down band members' good ideas. the vibe was totally lost, and it's not easy to tell your buddy's girlfriend to shut up and get out.

Oh God, is that EVER the kiss of death to:

1) Membership of said bandmember in band...

2) Band...

3) Friendship with said member...

4) All five.

This is not limited to song-writing sessions either. Never let non-contributing people be anywhere except in the audience at the gig.

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

I hate it when people scoop their mids. Anything below 5 just sounds stupid.

That really, really depends on the amp and style, so I'm going to have to negate this one.

Hell, your own 6505+ sounds so ******n good with the mids at 2!

What?

I have the bass and mids sitting between 5-6 with the highs around 7.

It starts sounding like nu-metal trash as soon as I start backing the mids off. It does a pretty good hotrodded 80s tone if you just keep the mids at a reasonable level.

edit

Actually I'll take that back. I backed the bias off to give my amp back some lowend and balls. After that, scooping the mids to 2 still doesn't sound scooped heh. It does sound darker and clearer though.

Hmmm,
I would also like to add, if you are lucky enough to have an attractive female lead singer..... Don't do that ummm her....
Unless you want your band to go down in smoking ruins.

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

Don't see people with one hum guitar "non versatile" or "one trick pony"!Listen to Friedman instead. He can show you what you can do ith only 1 Hum!

Never say "bolt-on guitars have better sustain"...

Don't believe in "maple" is a very bright wood.it can be different

Don't bleieve in "basswood is really well balanced".it can be different

There are no %100 correct "recipes" for good tone.Or bad tone.
A small reverb on a dead amp can really get the rythm back to life!
as long as you don't play fast riffs.
Scooping can add definition if the amp and the guitar is really middy!

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

a guy i jammed with last year had a godin, used the neck pickup into a fander deville with its gain cranked and a metalzone cranked also. sounded so horrible.

Words of wisdom.

Not sure I'd agree with that. How many tube-amp-owners have an extensive, mostly solid-state, pedal board out front? A modeler thats dialed-in correctly is just an elaborate all-in-one pedal. ;)

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

Theory and technique will only become as important as trivia if you never leave the bedroom and actually get out and play. Being on stage and making it happen is the difference between a guitar player and a musician.

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

But seriously, using band practice to learn your parts is a big issue with me. After showing the band the chart/ or the progressions I think band practice is designed for improving tightness, dynamics, starts, endings, transitions parts etc... in short.. to improve the ensemble on a whole. Not to teach, and reteach the lazy weak links their bloody parts..
Phew... okay rant over.

Wow man, someone who thinks the way I do!

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

Do NOT have Reverb and delay both at 50% and both on at the same time!

Luke

Whew! I escaped there! Thats way to low a number for me! Actually, when playing ambient stuff, I use lots of reverse and gated reverbs, 100% wet...and add some long delays/loops, around 25 secs...mmm, love it!
