The things that should NOT be DONE

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

you could classify me under this. 80w of tube power + high sensitivity speakers = more amp than i'll need. even at band practice i have to make sure i dont drown everyone else out BUT

volume below '2' the budda still sounds better than ANY solid state amp i've played and most tube amps. people familiar with over rated amps with brand names starting in 'm' somehow think tube amps ONLY sound good at high volumes. maybe your 'm' amp sounds like crap below 2 but not all of them do. my amp may sound better at high volumes but it still sounds great at low volumes (it takes a few min to get it at a low volume though, man this thing gets loud fast).

it's also nice to have clean headroom. i have more clean headroom then i'll ever need and loads more than any lower volume amp.

Ohhhh ... you have a Budda. That explains it. Of course that's going to sound awesome at any volume.

Same goes for Dr. Z amps. I can't believe how good they sound at low volume.

I was mainly referring to the people playing in their bedroom or at tiny venues with 100W half stacks.

My 6505+ works perfectly at bedroom volumes.

Sounds pretty much the same up till about 3 on the volume knob. Then it tightens up a bit. Not a whole ton of difference.

Pretty sure that any amp that gets all it's distortion from the preamp will be fine at any volume.

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

Never lend out a guitar for more than the length of a set, and even then keep both eyes on it at all times.

x eleventy billion

THIS was the result of lending the guitar out to a friend:

I have no Idea how he managed to ruin so much in so little time

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

Never use newly-aquired gear on a gig without having tested it at practice first. Trust me on this one.

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

Don't be closeminded................

Communicate without getting pissy. Too often band members think too much about "oh my guitar solo" or "my part, my part"

Look at the big picture.

And don't shoot down an idea because its unfamiliar or its "not your style" Try it out first. If you're still not feeling it. Talk about it.

And for christ sake's listen to your people. What makes your ears better than every else's?

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

Hahaha! Many drummers have a better "ear" than the guitar players ,since most drummers are more musicians in nature

That's a new one.

Anyway...

1. Using semi-hollows and tweed amps to play punk or metal should never be done. Throwing a Metalzone in front doesn't make it okay.

2. DON'T LEAVE GEAR UNATTENDED AT GIGS. Or put gear in the care of another band.

3. Playing the same cover(s) every show should be avoided.

I tried to relate this to a band I was in as they decided to trade in most of the PA and "upgrade" the night before my first gig with them. By the third time the power amp cut out on them I think you could almost hear my words echoing through the place.

There's a vicious video out there of Sting when he was with The Police and the first night he got ahold of a fretless Fender and decided to play it that night. It was just god-awful...he's all over the place with it.

I'm pretty sure East Bay Ray and Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys would just use any Fender amp they could find and turn it up. They were pretty damn punk, too.

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

Spandex.... OMG...... NEVER AGAIN!!!!

But seriously, using band practice to learn your parts is a big issue with me. After showing the band the chart/ or the progressions I think band practice is designed for improving tightness, dynamics, starts, endings, transitions parts etc... in short.. to improve the ensemble on a whole. Not to teach, and reteach the lazy weak links their bloody parts..
Phew... okay rant over.

So true.

Volume's should be kept in line. Just because you think your good doesn't mean you have to blare your amp so loud it drowns out the drummer, other guitarist, singer, bassist, and keyboardist....put together!

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

As a continuing of the other.

1. Crank the volume to 8-10! Get the drummer sweating, and by todays standards its only good to drown out the singer.

2. When playing a guitar solo, rehearse it so much, that by the time you play it live, you can actually move the guitar, and give it some attitude and balls, instead of just looking down on a fretboard.

3. Dont forget the factor of a good guitarstrap with locks.

4. Allways keep spare tubes and a fuse.

Number 1 is a issue I am dead serious on. I will rather play with out a PA in a club and crank the hell out of my amp than ruining my sound. :)

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

Never go up to 10. It's so 1970s. I mean even early Fenders were 2 louder.

You're insane. Almost every GREAT punk band has at least one hollowbody/Fender amp. It makes the sound so awesome!

Then again, I don't listen to s****y bad punk/metal. I listen to fantastic punk that almost everybody likes.

Re: The things that should NOT be DONE

Most people's vision of Punk is now Blink 182 or Sum41 type. Or even Pennywise and other great bands which have a pretty heavy sound.

Joe Strummer played a Tele...
Mick Jones played a LP through Mesas though.
The Sex Pistol's axeman played a LPCustom through a cranked Fender and while you may like it, I think it sounds pretty bad myself.

So once again, sound is entirely subjective. So you're both wrong :D It's not because this or that band uses this, or because you find this or that band great or not, that it's universal truth.
