The Triple Humbucker Conundrum!

Hey all. Thinking of picking up an Epi black beauty (The one with 3 pups) That I have hanging around my shop. Thought it would be fun to mess around with.

I was just wondering if anyone else has a guitar with a triple humbucker setup, and what worked for you? It comes stock with 3 of the same pickup I believe, which doesn't make much sense to me.

My idea was to go standard on the Bridge/Neck. Say.. Screamin Demon-b/59-n, and then use the mid for a wildcard. Toss in an Alt 8 or something and see how it works.

Or a tone zone.

Something weird.

Phat Cat? ::Shrugs::

I don't own a 3-'bucker guitar, (and probably never will), but to me, the Phat Cat is a "natural". Its a different tone. Its a single. It will mix well with the 'buckers in auto-split mode, and . . . its pole pieces, being in the center, make a beautiful visual balance.

Hmmm how about...Tv jones neck ( a 7K version ) phat cat middle and....customer 5 bridge?

+1. A Phat Cat in the middle, or a neck and middle, is ideal. For a variety of reasons, HB's sound totally different in the middle position, which is why no manufacturer copied Gibson on this; they all went with HSS & HSH, which has proved to be far more useful tone-wise.

If you give the bridge it's own volume & tone, you can use 2 push-pulls, one for coil cut, and the other for phase. This also gives you the option of selecting which coil is on during coil cut, giving you lots of possible combinations with the other two pU's.

I had a three pickup Dean, Cadillac. It had the following DiMarzio pickups in it.

Bridge: Super Distortion

Middle: Super II

Neck: PAF

It was a great sounding guitar but I sold it because the neck was too small.

Re: The Triple Humbucker Conundrum!

My Gibson Black Beauty has gold covered Custom 5/59n/59n, and that's a good set for the guitar.

On these guitars, the middle position is bridge/middle. So, you may want to get something like a C5 plus 59 and Jazz necks. Try both in the middle position, then put the loser in the neck position. That way, you can see which one gives the best middle position with the bridge.

Re: The Triple Humbucker Conundrum!

I wouldn't go too crazy but thats me...

A vintage 3 pickup LP would have 3 very similar pickups in it, thats true but like GJ said a great set up would be a bridge and then 2 neck buckers...

Re: The Triple Humbucker Conundrum!

I had an Epi Ace frehley with 3 Super distortions. Kinda made no sense, but they were diff just due to the position . But I did put a sweeter neck pup in.

I now have a Dean ML with 3 buckers and I have a
Dimarzio PAF in the neck, Duncan ALnico II pro in the mid and a Rio BBQ in the bridge and that thing sounds amazing in EVERY Setting!!!
