The ultimate pickup?

7 trim pots on the top of the pickup adjust the input level, master gain and 5-band e.q. Active e.q. circuit can be switched on or off and can be used to e.q. other passive pickups in the guitar. Humbucker is fully shielded and has coil tap wire for single coil option.

Re: The ultimate pickup?

Yeah, I think it looks a little odd too. Having to constantly pull out a flathead screwdriver to change sounds seems like a pain too, and would ruin the fun of having several guitars :). I just saw this topic on another board and thought I'd post it here.

Re: The ultimate pickup?

That's kind of interesting. I wonder what the magnet composition is and how much output you can get out of it?

Re: The ultimate pickup?

I think I'll save my $158 and spend it on a couple sets of Duncans, thanks. :D

It just feels like there's too much going on there - too many things to go wrong.

Re: The ultimate pickup?

Looks cool, but impractical. The sets I have in my Grosh and my G&L ARE my ultimate pickups, no more looking at all (honestly, nothing could possibly sound better to my ears).

Re: The ultimate pickup?

If you could just EQ everything after the fact like that, you wouldn't need good pickups. Why are people always looking for a more complicated technical alternative to doing something right the first time?

Re: The ultimate pickup?

I find it humorous that there are settings called "clean" and "distorted". That's what you have an amp for, not the pickups :smack:

Re: The ultimate pickup?

I had one I got by buying a parts lot on Ebay. I never used it. It seemed kind of fragile to me. I sold it for like $55 or something.

Re: The ultimate pickup?

Here's what would happen if I bought one: I'd find like 3 or 4 different setting (all with the knobs in TOTALLY different places), and decide it was too much of a pain in the ass to tweak them everytime I wanted to change. I'd either end up buying 3 more, or sell it in disgust :laugh2:

Re: The ultimate pickup?

You know, I wonder what it would sound like with everything on '11'.

That's the super-secret Spinal Tap setting. You can take both hands off your guitar and it will play itself.

Re: The ultimate pickup?

It's a wonderful idea for someone how wants to experiment with creating tones that are in between classic tones or similar to them. I think many people here missed the point of it ... the point was to get a flat response (I assume this the case only), and then be able to tweak the frequency response and output level. Clean and dirty? I hope they are talking about low to high output levels here, as I can't imagine sticking an overdrive inside there.
The NR thing is interesting, I assume to take out any noise that extreme eq adjustments would make.
I could swear though that Schaller made a pup exactly like that, but without the NR thing, and had a gain and 5 eq bands, so it resembled six pole pieces except they were trimpots. Always liked the idea myself, choose your EQ and output level, and your done ... you might even find settings that you wouldn't have found any other way. If it has low string pull, and high headroom, and is quiet then it's a nice addition ... ultimate though ... nope.
What if it came with a kit to change out the magnet, say with everything from A2,3,4,5, C5,8 ... change them, pick which one gives you what you like best, and then tweak from there. Okay maybe that gets a bit redundant, but it earns an *A* for tweakability though.
Again, didn't Schaller do that like 10 years ago?

I agree with that, although it would be useful for maybe a home studio or something similar...

Re: The ultimate pickup?

I don't see why you guys are saying it would be too much of a hassle to change the settings. The point of the pickup is having lots of different pickups easily at hand. With the turn of 7 screws, you can reproduce any pickup you want instead of actually replacing the pickup. Changing the settings every 5 minutes is NOT the point of this pickup. With regular pickups you only get one setting until you buy a new one and replace it, but with this you can completely renovate your sound without having to change a pickup. No complaining!

this thread is entirely based on subjective opinions

I'd say the majority of this board is based on subjective opinions
