The unthinkable...Triple Coil...

And Zhang - my man - you need an imagination implant. You missed the "How many coils" thread a week or two back. You need to put on your Nigel Tufnel hat and try again....

For that, I would require an omniscience implant. My imagination is fine, thank you, but there's no way I can be aware of every thread there ever was.

Re: The unthinkable...Triple Coil...

Thanks for bringing up this topic, Zhang.

I saw Doug Aldrich playing a Strat on a ( i think ) recent DVD with Dio. Let me tell you, he not only played insanely, he sounded incredible. I was wondering what it was. Maybe it was a Motherbucker.

Mighty Mite advertises the new Motherbuckers as "now able to fit into a regular humbucker slot without routing." Makes me think it might've been a triple coil at one time.

BTW - I've got one of the new MB's. Got it for $20 off eBay, and it ROCKS!
21k resistance, and it's loud! Crank up the gain and it's a monster.

Just right for me. Heheh.

The longer scale is part of the reason that a Strat is brighter than a Les Paul.

I would think it was the single coils versus the humbuckers, or the woods, but I could be wrong...............................

The single coils is a big part of it, but not all of it. As I said earlier, you can put humbuckers in a Strat and it still won't sound as beefy as your average LP.

Here's your triple Coil:

I got this from "The Guitar Handbook" by Ralph Denyer.

I like that. "I've got yer triple coil (points to nether region) right here!"

Looks like it's either all slugs or all rod magnets.

Re: The unthinkable...Triple Coil...

I'm coming into this thread a kinda late in the game, but I think this idea has potential. In another thread somewhere, far, far away, I "painted" a triple coil idea that I had. Although, that thread was somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

The idea was, take a standard humbucker, or single-coil size bobbin of around 9k. Place on both sides of it, a pair of Lil59 style coils. One of 2/3's and one of 1/3 the middle coil, or 6k and 3k respectively. The overall size would be the same as a humbucker. Place the two magnets underneath with like polarity's facing the center. (Like a Phat Cat or P90.) The two outside coils would be wound the same direction, and connected such that they'ld act as a single coil as far as humbucking goes. But, when split, you could select either the 9k or 6k coils for a dramatically different tone.

Anyway - it sounded good on paper. I even had a name for it . . . The Trifecta. :)
