Re: The Well LXXX -- aleclee

iirc, you graduated from west point, why did you decide against a career in the military?

It was a combination of things.
  1. I hate moving ;)
  2. My unit stayed home during Desert Storm (but I met my wife during that period) and I didn't like my chances of advancement given 70% of the officers in my branch now had combat experience.
  3. When they offered to let people out early as I was approaching the end of my 3rd year (my obligation was 5), I looked ahead and could only come up with nine years of "good jobs" out of the next 17. In retrospect, that number was probably low but it is what it is.
  4. Being raised in California, my laid-back vibe didn't always play well with my subordinates or superiors
  5. I ended up in a unit that wasn't that great and fell well short of my expectations. Given my lack of a generally positive experience in the Army, I decided it was a good time for a career change.

favorite korean bbq in town?
I haven't eaten Korean food in Denver in years. There were a couple good places in Aurora but I'm not sure that either is still in business. Given Aurora has half of Colorado's Korean population, you can bet that the best Korean food would be out that way.

fave bond actor and bond film?
I thought Diamonds are Forever was classic but Daniel Craig in Casino Royale was closer to the version in the books. In order, I'd probably rank them
  1. Craig
  2. Connery
  3. Dalton
  4. Brosnan
  5. Lazenby
  6. Moore

what do we not know about you that you'd like us to?

what are some of the philosophical truths that guide you in your day-to-day?

favorite childhood memory?

how's that axe-fx treatin' ya?

Re: The Well LXXX -- aleclee

you must be one of the only people who would rate timothy dalton as one of the top 3 bonds, lol.

ill ask all the usual questions:

when did you 1st pick up a guitar, was it instant love, and was there one song in particular that made you think, "I have to learn how to do that"

Re: The Well LXXX -- aleclee

What's your pie chart breakdown of where you spend your forum time?

As an active member here, Supporting Member on TGP, and old school guru on a Jeep forum, I know how fun it is to hop boards for different flavors.

What's your favorite Colorado micro brew?
Not a big fan of beer in general and find most micros to be overly hopped. If pressed, some of the root beers done by the microbreweries would get my nod.

what do we not know about you that you'd like us to?
Despite my relative abundance of fun music toys, I do generally view them as tools that help me make the music that's in my head. The "best" gear is whatever enables you do achieve your musical vision whether it's booteek or bargain basement.
what are some of the philosophical truths that guide you in your day-to-day?
Be excellent to each other...AND PARTY ON, DUDES!!!

Seriously, probably something along the lines of
  • People should be treated with respect until they show they don't deserve it. People who don't deserve it are better left ignored.
  • A man's word is his bond
  • Obligations to family trump most anything else
  • I'd rather be disliked for being true to my beliefs than be a popular fraud

what did your parents/family of origin do well that you hope to emulate as a parent?
They provided structure and love.

what did your parents/family of origin do not well that you hope to improve upon as a parent?
They didn't take much interest in my interests. For example, in three years of running track, they never came to see me run.

favorite childhood memory?
Fishing with my grandfather and favorite great-uncle in northern Ontario.

how's that axe-fx treatin' ya?
Last weekend, I hooked it up to my Boss looper. There were times where the recorded tone stunned me to the point where I'd just stop and listen to it. The amp tones in the thing are phenomenal and I've only started scratching the surface with its FX.

when did you 1st pick up a guitar, was it instant love, and was there one song in particular that made you think, "I have to learn how to do that"
I loved guitar before I ever picked one up. I remember when I was six, putting my violin in my lap and strumming it pretending I was playing guitar. Didn't actually get a guitar 'til my 14th birthday but I was hooked long before that.

What's your pie chart breakdown of where you spend your forum time?
25% here
25% Axe-FX forum
25% Rivals.com Army Football Discussion
20% Scout.com Army Football Discussion
5% TGP

I'm more or less on sabbatical from TGP. Some of the stuff going on there has made it not so fun for me. I'm going through a phase where a lot of ad hominem attacks bring me way down so I'm avoiding them. I've recently checked out of an email discussion group for much the same reason.

If I had unlimited disposable income...

I'd buy a couple more guitars, travel more, and coach youth football in my free time.

Re: The Well LXXX -- aleclee

A crap-load of questions is no prob. A load of crap questions is less likely to be answered. :D

Okay, here goes...

Megadeth or Metallica?

Are The Beatles really the best band of all time?

If you could only listen to one band's discography, which band would you choose?

Les Pauls, pickguard or no?

Mesa, Marshall, Vox, or Fender? amps-wise.

Telecasters, trash or treasure?

What was the happiest moment of your life?

Saddest moment?

Religious beliefs? If you care to share.

Favorite color?

Favorite sport/physical activity?

What song describes your life best? Youtube link if possible, please.

What is your best personality trait?

What is your worst personality trait?

Rock or Rap?

That's all for now.

Re: The Well LXXX -- aleclee

aside from music, what else do you do for fun?
I try to go snowboarding but that's been on hold since Mini-Me was born. I like to read and tinker with tech. At the gym I play some squash (getting hurt too often, though :() and do pilates. I run a fantasy football league and try to keep up on the Broncos and Army Football. Been a Broncos season ticket holder since '96.
Megadeth or Metallica?
Megadeth. I find Metallica to be fatiguing to listen to.
Are The Beatles really the best band of all time?
I really dislike the use of the term "best", especially on things music-related and particularly on intarwebs discussion sites. Ain't no such thing as a best band. Only what speaks most profoundly to a particular individual.

I do think that they were brilliant songwriters, though. I've had "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" stuck in my head since I was at Guitar Workshop four weeks ago.
If you could only listen to one band's discography, which band would you choose?
As with "best", I'm not a big fan of "only one" discussion either because for me it tends to emphasize flexibility over quality and that's not really the way I roll. For example, the short answer to your question would be Led Zeppelin but that's because their catalog is the most varied, not because they're my favorite band. That honor would go to Pink Floyd. I'm also a Queensryche fan going back to '81 but a decade full of stinky releases has relegated them more to "stuff I used to listen do".
Les Pauls, pickguard or no?
I'm more of a PRS Singlecut guy so I suppose that would put me in the "no pickguard" camp.

Mesa, Marshall, Vox, or Fender? amps-wise.
Despite having gone through my share of gear, I've only owned Fender (Hot Rod Deluxe) out of that list. I had a stock one and now one an Omega-modded one.

If I'm getting my overdrive from pedals, I'd say Fender. If pedals aren't allowed, I'd take Mesa.

Telecasters, trash or treasure?
There's a saying that people either love cilantro or hate it. I'm one of those odd folks who can either take it or leave it.

I bring this up because I'm kind of lukewarm on Teles. I don't dislike 'em like I do Strats and rather like the MIM ash Tele I own but wouldn't describe it as "treasure". They're useful guitars and surprisingly versatile but not my favorite tool for pursuing my musical vision.

What was the happiest moment of your life?
Probably the day we brought my son home from the hospital. It was a difficult pregnancy and homecoming meant that both mother and son were doing okay.

Saddest moment?
When my grandfather died. We were very close.

Religious beliefs? If you care to share.
Probably best described as Christian who hasn't yet found a church that fails to bug me. I'll just leave it at that.

Favorite color?
Blue.

Favorite sport/physical activity?
Squash or snow sports. If I had the time, money, location, I'd probably say surfing.

What song describes your life best? Youtube link if possible, please.
Dunno if any song could do it justice. It's a work in progress that's had its share of twists, turns, ups and downs. I wouldn't say it's extraordinary--I just think that it's hard to effectively distill most lives into a song.

What is your best personality trait?
Sense of humor

What is your worst personality trait?
Impatience

Rock or Rap?
Rock. As with hair metal, rap has too much posing and not enough music for my taste.
