Re: The Well LXXXI - Kirei
Sadly my government computer hates your links, but otherwise, I may be able to provide some insight.
Typically, if you're looking to entertain younger children, you want to look for three things in anime. The first is overall cuteseyness. Stupid thing, yes, but it's true. The second thing is some sort of "friendship." Finally, the third is whimsical quest or journeys.
What I'm getting at here is That children love to pretend. Anything with a system that plays to both their level of intelligence and imagination, gives them some sort of comraderie, and takes them on a journey is gold.
A good example is Pokémon. I've loved the franchise since 1995, and it's likely because of those three things. Obviously, many of the monsters are cute, and the friendship with these companions has a strong overtone in the anime AND in the games. And the journey/quest? To become the ultimate trainer of all of these hundres of creatures by travelling the world and meeting them along the way.
As far as specific examples go, there are others such as Yu-Gi-Oh! and Bakugan which rely on the concept of games. These are designed with franchising in mind, but that's almost what you want with children. Beyblades is another good, but now all-too-forgotten series.
As for me? I wouldn't follow that route at all. I would go to great lengths to produce something more along the lines of My Neighbor Totoro or Kiki's Delivery Service (Two of my favourites as a child and they remain so to this day) because of the amazing story and attachment to the characters one gains.
I work in the animated children's cartoon industry (licensing) and see that most anime is too sophisticated for the youngest viewers.
Can you recommend some simple anime with light themes, which is geared for young children?
And if you had the opportunity to produce that type of animated children's cartoon, done in the Japanese anime style, which theme and basic storyline do you think would appeal to a big studio, looking to venture into that area?
Here's some I'm working with.
