I saw a plug for these things a few years ago but figured they were just pure cheese and not worth a damn.

Needless to say, I've never seen anyone play one and figured they'd just stopped producing them.

So I'm curious, has anyone here played one? How are they? Just for curiosity's sake...... And yes, the amp is called a Wiggy :smack:

Edit: Just looked at the close up view of the front. The layout and controls were horribly designed/placed. I also like the more/less labeling on the EQ. Hahahahaha.

wow...I played one of those years ago at my local guitar shop, and it was basically put on clearance a few months after they brought it in...I tried a few different guitars through it, and thought it sounded like a huge bag of @ss.

Kinda my impression as well.. A bag of ass. Nicely put. Never played through one but I've heard one. They've been out for a few years though, I'm just baffled that they are still making them.

Re: They still make these!?!?!

We had one at the store where I used to work. We finally raffled it off. $10 per ticket. It took almost 2 years to sell the 150 tickets. The guy who won it thinks "Hey! I've got a $2000 amp now! I should sell it!"

Good luck pal...

They sell for $600 TOPS on e-bay. FenderFan is right. Bag of Ass is bang-on.

Re: They still make these!?!?!

I've owned one since they came out and I LOVE it. The problem with the amp in stores is that every freaking knob, dial, or slider effects the tone in a major way. It's nearly impossible to dial it in during a quick run through at a store. I hated it at the store, but took the chance anyway. Glad I did!

I've tweaked with mine for years and the way I've got it set up now with a nice clean tone with a slight touch of grit, it gets nothing but compliments and surprise that a amp so weird looking can sound so good. I have 5 other amps and my band prefers me to use the Wiggy and most anyone who hears me play prefers the Wiggy.

It is SS, but it takes pedals VERY well. Even OD's which a lot of times don't work that great with SS amps. It LOVES single-coils. Humbuckers not so much.

I does take time to learn what does what on the amp. But once you do, it's very versitile. I use it a lot for recording.
It has a plethora of tones in it. It's not like any other amp I've ever come across. And for some people that's a good thing and for others not.

As for other players using it. I saw Dweezil Zappa live in 2004 and he had two set up. One was the proto type tube version, which sadly never hit the market. It sounded like a Vox/Marshall. Sweet! Blues Saraceno also has one and uses it for recording at times. There was a Wiggy demo CD floating around a few years ago with both Dweezil and Blues playing the Wiggy and it sounded really good in their hands. The amp is also used a lot on Dweezil new CD, Go With What You Know. Very distinctive tone.

The strong points of the amp is it's clean tones with single coils. Just gorgeous once dialed in. Add some reverb or delay to that and it's on.

The downside of it would be how it looks and the lack of reverb. I think the major mistakes Peavey made with this amp was making it SS state first with the intention of tubes later(dumb), and giving the amp the curved top.

All and all, I LOVE the Wiggy, but I can easily see how it wouldn't appeal to a lot of people.

Re: They still make these!?!?!

Yeah, they still make them, probably wouldn't if Zappa hadn't grown fond of them. I have to admit I like the cheesy look of it, from the audio clips it sounded great for SS but rather mediocre by tube standards. It'd probably sound even more mediocre when played by someone who isn't the son of FZ.
