Things We Do To Our Stratocasters

So I was reading a thread earlier today & I think it was Firebirdguy who had made a comment about Stratocasters & the fact that with the right guards and pickups you can do just about anything with them? I had to agree, my very first "REAL" guitar was a used MIM Strat, it was the guitar I learned to really play on & I've owned dozens of them since! I've also owned dozens of others, Gibsons, Hammer's, E.S.P.'s, various other Shred Sticks, Godin's & some I've probably long forgotten, but the one constant in my life has been a Strat!

Really, I love all things Leo, Music Mans, G&L's, & especially Fender! I grew up listening to Sabbath, Zeppelin, Clapton, Pink Floyd & stuff like that because that's what my dad was into? I always liked it but to me it was old guy music & @ the time I couldn't begin to fathom the skills these fellas playing guitar had! I knew they were good, but only because my dad said so, I didn't really know why???

When I was about 15 my older sister introduced me to Nirvana & to grunge in general, seeing Kurt pounding the hell out of his own Strat and other Offset Fenders, I was in complete aww! I think I bought my first Strat about 6 months later! Then I learned a few chords and started a hardcore Grunge/Punk band! Since then I've been in Alternative bands, Hardcore bands, Blues bands, Jam bands & played just about every other genre you can think of @ some point? No matter what kind of music I was playing the Strat always had a place at the table! I even followed Phish for about 14 months & the one thing that was always with me, and was never for sale, no matter how broke we were was my Strat!

By the time I was 16-17 I could already rip one apart and put it back together with my eyes closed & I started Modding guitars around the same time? I quickly realized that I didn't need to buy a new guitar because I was playing different music, I just needed to change some things around & if I got it right I could get the sound I was looking for & keep playing on the same neck I grew to love?

Many Strats later & for me this philosophy still rings true, I've made guards that were amazing & some that were just plain stupid but they have all been fun & given me a fairly good understanding of what to expect when I do something new to any Stratocaster! So if your a Strat modder show your stuff, I'll try and get a picture of my current Strats up sometime tonight....

Re: Things We Do To Our Stratocasters

I can't imagine NOT modding a guitar. Some just more than others.

Re: Things We Do To Our Stratocasters

I've considered flipping the jacks on a few of mine more than once, it doesn't get in your way while you play???
I don't even notice it. But then, I'm not one for big arm swings. If it ever gets in the way, I can always reverse it back. Meanwhile, it's really nice for plugging and unplugging. It's probably the easiest mod you can do.

Here's a group photo I took earlier today, it has almost all my Stratocasters in it, I've got one more but my girlfriend's dad is borrowing it at the moment. I'll try & get some closeups up later so you guys can see what's actually going on in there!

I'll have to give it a shot, ten seconds of work to do it & ten seconds of work to change it back if I find it problematic???

Yeah, a take out two screws and move the jack to the other side. Replace the two screws and it's back on.

Re: Things We Do To Our Stratocasters

I love Strats, I've settled in on them being "my" guitar. I have 4 "real" Strats, two super strats and two bodies w/pickups awaiting necks. The scale, shape, ergonomics, etc. just fit me. From the vintage flavored (SSL-1/APS-1, underwound Texas Special style) to hot and heavy (EMG 85, PAF Pro, Injector, Red/Silver/Blue Lace Sensor) I have a lot of ground covered and they all feel right in my hand.

Long live the Stratocaster!

I'm right there with you 100% and can relate to a huge portion of your story myself.

These are my current MIJ bullets. One I'm
Very happy with (might change the middle pickup someday), the other I'm looking for a new bridge pickup (hotrails maybe). Strats are it for me. I basically figured that out over 10 years ago. I've had and played many other guitars, but this is where it's at.

Re: Things We Do To Our Stratocasters

First and foremost, I love a good Strat and I can get it to work for me much quicker and easier than most guitars.

But... I'm not a fan of the placement of the volume knob. My hand bangs into it constantly. I prefer the 2-knob setup. Funny thing is, I didn't have this problem until I stopped playing my Strat for a while and then went back to it... the natural position of my picking hand shifted.

Also, I need the middle pickup lowered quite a bit as that's where I tend to pick, and my pick will run into the middle pickup if it's not lowered.

This is 2015. There's no reason for a strat or tele to have a huge blocky heel anymore. This should be the default heel except on Vintage reissues or builds:

Re: Things We Do To Our Stratocasters

I'm doing a Charvel So Cal with P Rails and a custom triple shot system to switch it all. I am mounting the switching on the bottom of the pickups so I can switch on the fly with my middle finger on my picking hand. I will switch or blend the neck and bridge pickups with the 3 way toggle switch which comes standard with the guitar. Sigler music is gunna do the custom switching for me. I am also gunna have them add two tone switches beside the volume. With case $1000. I am waiting for them to get a white model in.

That's why I moved mine. For me, I knock into the volume knob when muting if it's right next to the bridge pickup. Of course, I changed to a Strat when I went back to playing after a number of years away from it. I had Teles and an LP before. To fill the hole I put a push on/push off master serial/parallel switch which is low enough to not get in the way. If that had been a issue, I'd have just made a new pickguard without it.

Found this one used and couldn't pass it up. Wilkinson bridge and 3 Duncans; JB Jr. (neck), Duckbucker (mid), Hot Rails (bridge).

Re: Things We Do To Our Stratocasters

posted this before a few times.. modded to hell MIK Squire.. bullet series.

thinking of adding 1 more mini-switch and changing out the middle 'pup pretty soon. I also will be changing out the schaller mega E switch out for a regular 5 way.. plus I need to replace the toggle switch.... apparently the kill switch committed suicide.. lmao.. sometime in the future, she needs a fret job and a new nut

closeup of the pickguard. Im actually thinking of redoing this and doing a tad better job.. kinda botched the pickup holes a bit. I had to enlarge them because of the covers.. I really think a router would of been better for this but all i had was a dremal. Also, the hole I covered with epoxy needed to be colored.. I could of mixed some white paint to the epoxy but had none.. AND im impatient

I ordered the parts. Just waiting for them to arrive

Same story! I modified my Stratacopy quite a lot when I was seventeen / eighteen, I gouged out a tone of wood under the pick guard and had a total of seven knobs. I replaced the selector with a bank of dip switches, changed the pickups and tuners, glued things to it, scraped the brand name off the headstock etc. I'm embarrassed even thinking about it. Then a few years later I bought a genuine Fender Strat and ever since all my guitars have had purely stock appearance. My exploits in Strat modding were so over the top that now I can't even stand the thought of it anymore... a lot like schnapps.

OTOH, I have a project in mind, I want to buy a Strat copy, give it five single coils and some sort of patch bay what will allow any pickup combo, in series or parallel, in phase or out of phase, in any order... that will be fun.

Re: Things We Do To Our Stratocasters

Strats just seem like the "default guitar", if you say "electric guitar" to 100 people, 95 of them picture Strats. (The rest of them think LP's, but that's a different thread)
I have several Strats right now, none of them are stock. In fact, I haven't bought one entire Strat all at the same time for YEARS... all mine are Parts-Casters I put together from spare parts I got from all over. That's the beauty of the Strat, 653465326 different companies make parts for these, and they all fit with little to no work. You can customize your personal guitar any way you like. Plus the contours just make the guitar "dissapear" when you're playing it, unlike something with square corners (*cough) LP (cough*)
