Re: Things you never thought you'd want in a guitar...

From the time I first started playing, I never thought I'd prefer fixed-bridge guitars. But now I like the stability and having my crazy bends not affect the other strings.

Never thought I'd like low-output, unpotted humbuckers. But here I am with the… um… Burstbuckers.

Never thought I'd prefer a 22-fret guitar. I mean, can't a 24-fret guitar do everything a 22-fretter can do, and more? Well, not exactly.

Didn't think growing up that my best playing would end up being on guitars with relatively high action. I play cleaner and more deliberately; I tend to make notes count. And when I put my mind to it, I can still blaze.

P90. I thought it was the ugliest pickup ever made and now I have lust on P90 equipped guitars (currently have one but want more).

For the longest time I was sure that trems made your guitar tone suck and wouldn't touch anything without a fixed bridge. My main guitar has a Floyd now.

I was the same way until I got my Epi Pro/Fx with the Floyd. Even without a brass block, this guitar's sound with a Super Distortion bridge and Jazz (Duncan Designed) neck is on par with my Gibson with a Custom Custom and A2P! I love having both a Les Paul tone and a trem.

Humbuckers ONLY.

I grew with SSS, SSH and HSH configurations. Got used to dealing with single coils.

Nowadays, give me individual push/pulls for splitting two humbuckers and two volume knobs and I'm ready.
In fact while I'm GASing for something with P90s, I'm not sure I really want that for me.

For some silly reason I've always had some sort of "vintage-correct" reminiscence on my guitars, and always thought I'd only get the sounds I want from a LP and a Strat/Tele.
While I'd probably be much more at home with something closer to a PRS.

DIEGO...If you've gone through all those singles and hummers, it sounds like you've really deep down been searching for P-90's.

If you like singles and like humbuckers, you're gonna LOVE P-90's. Get a LP or SG with good P-90's and you'll never look back. Seriously!

Re: Things you never thought you'd want in a guitar...

About the only things I still actively resist are shred-thin necks, super-pointy guitars, and bolt-on guitars with painted necks - like solid colors. I can't say exactly why, but when I look at a bolt-on with the neck painted the same color as the body, I see it like an old gibson knock-off that used a bolt design to cut cost over the real thing. Just looks cheesy to me.

That's funny that you said that. I've never really given it any thought as to "why", but I always hated painted bolt-on necks too. But now that you mention that and I think about it, it just rang a bell in my head. That's exactly how I feel...like a cheapo Gibby knock-off trying to save a few bucks (of course making it look even more cheapo than it already is).

Great comment, Adam.

Re: Things you never thought you'd want in a guitar...

single coil pickups, p-90 pickups, vintage-style fender bridge with sharp screws jutting into my palm, less than 24 frets, non neck-through guitars, a korean guitar, strings that haven't been changed in forever, a decent neck pickup, a volume knob I actually use in between the full-on and full-off postions.

Looks like what you've got on your lap right now is your girlfriend (which is where that little cutie should be).

Re: Things you never thought you'd want in a guitar...

P-90's.

A few years ago I tried one. Now my four main guitars have P-90's. It's my fav. I rarely play anything but P-90's (at least in the bridge, which I use 90% of the time).

Re: Things you never thought you'd want in a guitar...

Actually, there was a time when I thought that what I wouldn't want was more than one or two guitars. Now I can't seem to get enough. I think my ideal number of guitars to own would be..... uhm, let me see...... well now that I've given it some good thought.....I think it would be every guitar ever made.

Re: Things you never thought you'd want in a guitar...

I don't actually recall saying I'd NEVER have so and so on a guitar... and have changed my mind :9:

However I HAVE reconsidered on some lesser "needs" I felt I had to have, although they still remain my preference like say 24 frets. I can now love a 22-fretted guitar just fine but seeing as sometimes during my playing I run out of frets while on the high E, well, both my no.1s have 24 let's put it like that.

Neckthrough is another thing, I always thought that it was supposed to be the ultimate neck joint. Again, my first main axe is set neck by choice, the other a Bolt-on but still love it as all heck just the same.

I have never pictured me with a proper LP or Tele in my hands and, I still can't, unless the Michael Kelly Patriot counts now :9:
