Things you used to do with your guitars you won't do anymore?

Re: Things you used to do with your guitars you won't do anymore?

I love setting up my guitars. Everything has to be tweaked just right. When I started, I asked my teacher about setup, he did a quick fret job in front of me, and I paid him to change the pickups and set up a couple guitars for me to see how it was. After that I was off, I taught myself everything. Nut building, fret levels, custom string sets for a few different kinds of guitars. I do some kind of work on my guitars most weeks.

Re: Things you used to do with your guitars you won't do anymore?

Have to reach back to junior high school, but...
  • I won't play them as-is without ever trying to set them up.
  • I won't ever trade or buy a new one when the previous one stops playing in tune.
  • I won't choose which to buy solely by the color, unless it's only a stage prop.
  • I won't plug them into a Sears amplifier, unless I'm trying to get 'that sound.'
  • I won't hand it to a tech to do work on it without knowing how to do what they are going to do to it.
  • I won't let someone else play them unless I know they know how to play better than I, or I lay some ground rules first.
  • I won't take them out of the case as soon as I walk into a room.
  • I won't play for hours and just stick them right back in the case without wiping/cleaning parts that were touched.
  • I won't throw them around and smash them for purely visual stage effect.

Re: Things you used to do with your guitars you won't do anymore?

1. Fuss w/mods & upgrades so much. These days, I can take any guitar off the rack, set it up to my preferences, & get all the tone I need from it. The only mod necessary may be switching to a scorching hot bridge humbucker.

2. Cases. They take uo so much space, and I prefer to have my guitars out on display or in my hands. (For me), if a guitar can be put in a case, it can be sold off.

3. Stickers.

Re: Things you used to do with your guitars you won't do anymore?

I no longer wait for a string to break before I chamge them.

I no longer trust guitar store "techs" with my guitars.

I no longer automatically dismiss Mexican guitars as junk.

I no longer care what other guitar players think about my guitars or my playing.

I no longer polish my guitars religiously and lovingly aet them in the case like tucking in a newborn baby.

I no longer use cheap stands.

I no longer care if the paint gets a scratch.

Re: Things you used to do with your guitars you won't do anymore?

I no longer swap them every 6 months (average) for something else
I no longer play with the volume and tone permanently on 10
I no longer mod my guitars as soon as I get them... squire bullet, stock. Squier jazz master, stock. Squier Jazz bass, stock. Epiphone Plus top LP, stock. Do I have plans to mod? Meh, kinda. I found out that they all sound pretty good as is, especially through a decent amp.
I no longer wish my guitars sounded just like the guitars my heroes use. They never will.

Re: Things you used to do with your guitars you won't do anymore?

I no longer change my strings every year or so (now it's typically monthly)

I don't buy the heaviest strings I can get my hands on (I use 10s on everything)

I don't use the heaviest picks I can get my hands on (now I typically use .73s)

I don't try to get more overdrive by playing as hard as possible (now I just turn up the gain a little bit more and let the amp do the work)

That is the saddest thing I've ever heard. How would spending a mere $90 dollars on the exact pickup that Steve Harris uses not get your tone close to his? A P Bass is a block of wood!

A buddy of mine did that with an old plywood "SG". For another friend's documentary that he did of their band, for a communications class final in college.

Lol! I did that with a barely playable Kay acoustic. I snapped the headstock off an old Teisco in an accident then screwed the pickups onto the soundboard of the Kay

Re: Things you used to do with your guitars you won't do anymore?

I no longer have more guitars than I need.
I no longer baby my guitars. Dings+scratches+bare wood=badass!
I no longer care what people think of my playing.
I no longer use more gain to sound heavier.
I no longer try to be loud to get heard.
I no longer envy others' sound. In the end when I use it, it doesn't sound right and end up dialing my sound again.

So I hear you on the Jazzmaster... Those pickups are decent (I have no problem with the stock pickups on my VM Jazzmaster.) Also have no problem with the pickups in my VM Jazz Bass. I might hate every day the Bullet had stock pickups, though. I recently had an experience that opened my eyes up to ceramic single coils not being totally horrible, but I'd still never want to deal with them, and next to the stock VM Jazzmaster, I'd never pick up a stock Bullet.

Re: Things you used to do with your guitars you won't do anymore?

You know you gotta give more details on that one, right?
32 years and I've never ever smashed a guitar.

My first gig when I was 14 was in a new wave/punk band. We covered The Ramones, Clash, The Who and played a bunch of our originals. Every gig I would smash a guitar. Then the roadies (our middle school friends) would collect the parts and I would put the guitar together for the next gig. Some plastic wood and and a spray bomb later the guitar was ready for the next gig. Once I got my first good guitar, my Ibanez Iceman the guitar smashing days were over. I will tell you smashing a guitar feels great as hell. The gasps from the audiuence are freaking fantastic. I might pick up a $200 axe to destroy for the first gig with this new band for old time sake.
