My fried was playing at the bar tonight and the i think the speaker bust on him. I checked the tube and the fuse in his vox ad30vt and looked fine, tried playing through the headphone jack and got a signal. then opened up the back to test the speaker with a 9v battery and found the speaker to be quite hot.

So am I right that this is the speaker blowing? Ive never really felt a speaker after normal use so dont know if they tend to get hot. If it helps, the amp was on for a few hours and the speaker is some no name 'made for vox' brand.

Thus if it sounds like the speaker has gone, anyone have any recomendations for a new one?

Thanks guys

You don't really explain what the amp actually DID. Did it quit while being played? Any symptoms? Noises? Buzzing? Itching? loss of appetite? wait...I'm getting off track here.
If you can't get a signal through the headphone jack, that would make me think it may not the the speaker. You can't really tell by looking at a preamp tube that it is blown like you can a fuse. They are fairly easy to replace by taking the back panel off the amp. Thats what I would try first.

It made noises when dying, kindof a blubbing buzz then died. I said i Can get a signal though the headphones, and Not the speaker. Therefore the tube must be working.

Anyone know what wattage and ohm rating the stock speaker is??

thanks

Oh, yeah I see that now, after rereading. Risking making myself sound like a wimp, I have to confess, I have never blown a speaker, so I don't know what the death throes of one sound/act like. The speaker itself though, should have the wattage and Ohms printed on it. I'm too lazy to open mine up to see since you are going to have to open yours anyway. I have heard a lot of people say that the speakers in the 30 watt models are not as good as the ones in the 15 and 50 watt versions, so maybe it will be an improvement if thats what it is. Good luck.

well i opened it up after this happened, it has no sticker and only says ad30vt followed by a serial number...which sucks

Take the 2 leads off the speaker and tape them to a speaker cable, then plug the other end into a cab. That'll tell you right away.

Hopefully, he kept the receipt, because Vox has a 5 year warranty.
I'd recommend a Celestion Vin 30.
