thinking about putting EL34's back in my JSX.

my JSX came with JJ 6L6's when i bought it, but i've never owned an EL34 amp. so i'm not sure which one i like better.

i'm still waiting for a bunch of preamp tubes to arrive and experiment with, so i may be jumping the gun. but the gain is a bit on the gritty/grainy side and a bit scooped for my taste on both channels.

granted, i havent cranked it yet. does this even really matter at low/medium volumes without lighting up the power tubes?

the speakers are texas heats.

however, comma, i'm waiting until i build the open back cab to make any decisions. i'm 99% sure this closed subwoofer box i'm using is messing up my tone a bit.

there was a slight difference at low volumes on my xxx with el34's - it was less bassy, more midrange-a 'more stiff' all around sound. I ultimately ended up liking el34's. especially cranked. of course Switching the preamp tubes will make the most difference though.

KT77s will give you a blend of both EL34 and 6L6. VERY nice tubes in the JSX.

Ruby EL34s are also a very good tube. One of the bigger-toned, and more musical EL34s. I would like to try the TungSol EL34B. I hear good things.

My favorite 6L6s in the JSX are the Ruby 6L6MSTR, JJs are nice, but can be dark.
