Re: Thinking of a A8 in a custom wind....thoughts?
Stuffing an A8 into any Custom-series pickup to make an Custom 8 is one of the more popular magnet swaps in the forum. It's a great all-around high output pickup. Compared to a ceramic, it's not as harsh, cool upper midrange bite, punchy tight bass but curiously open feel. It's a bit harder a feel than the A2 magnet, not as much squish.
If you want higher output but to keep a similar feel, an Unoriented A5 (UOA5) might be a better choice. Winds up a bit brighter, bit deeper bass, but it's still softer in feel than stronger magnets.
If you search for fowl2338, he has some great samples of the Custom 8 for thrash (though that's far from all it's capable of).
Unless the LP Studio is particularly bright, I'd try it in the N2 first, as it can be a bit too warm in a big slab of mahogany. But tastes vary.
