Thinking of knocking the "pretty" off of my SG Supreme.

Re: Thinking of knocking the "pretty" off of my SG Supreme.

It's your guitar, dude. If you really love how it plays and sounds but you don't like how it looks, then do whatever you want to it.

Personally, I don't really like SG supremes. If I had one, I'd probably sell it and get something I liked more instead. If I really liked how it played and it got me the sound in my head, then I'd just forget how it looks, play the hell out of it and let it get beaten up a bit on the way.

But hey, like I said, it's your guitar. If you like how it plays and sounds too much to sell it, but you really don't like its appearance and you don't give a sh*t about resale, then go nuts. Refinish it with rocks and a shotgun if you want. People might judge you for it, but y'know...f*ck'em.

I used to date Charlize Theron.

Her incredible beauty made it hard for me to let myself go in the bedroom.

So I said: "She is just too pretty. I need to knock some of that off her..."

I have some regrets.

I like you.

I would have no problem refinishing one of those. They're not high dollar collectibles and are pretty cool guitars except I've always hated the flame on them. I say slap her around with a big ugly paint brush!!!

Re: Thinking of knocking the "pretty" off of my SG Supreme.

There's a band here in Athens (and apparently touring to a few other places) called Music Hates You, that is notorious for two things: 1) playing at obscene volumes (as in, make the hard drives skip in the workstation trying to record them 30ft from the stage loud), and 2) playing very iffy equipment ("No, man, there's only one good speaker in that 412... the rest are blown.").

Anyway, when I caught them, their second guitarist (who may or may not still be with them), was this giant hulking redheaded dude with a mohawk. On the back of his gorgeous Fireburst SG Supreme was a big-ass skull sticker that nearly made me cry.

Interesting show, though (loudest damn cover of a Bob Dylan song I'd ever heard). The other guitarist isn't in this clip - just thought I'd show it for reference.

Re: Thinking of knocking the "pretty" off of my SG Supreme.

I don't understand being afraid to play it because it is too pretty. This says to me you are afraid of defacing it, but that is exactly what you would do if you refinished it (granted the "defacing" could make it look better than before).

HOWEVER, one thing that everyone has derided you has failed to realize (or at least acknowledge) is that the SG Supreme is the only SG I know of that has a slab of maple glued on top of the body. So, if you like the way it sounds but don't like the way it looks, I'd be all for refinishing it. Another plain-jane SG may not sound like that one.

Re: Thinking of knocking the "pretty" off of my SG Supreme.

I bought a used SG Supreme on eBay a few weeks ago. I love the guitar, but it's too pretty. I know it sounds weird. I'm not really digging the flame top and finish. I'd like to refinish it so that I'm not so scared to play it like it needs to be played. I'm thinking about going with a satin black finish. I have no clue where to begin. Any suggestions?

Sand it down and get some of that krylon spray paint in a can from Lowes like that one guy does on here to like nine $80 guitars a week.

That's my advice.

Re: Thinking of knocking the "pretty" off of my SG Supreme.

All I know is I've got a collectible and beautiful SG, and I like it so much I'm just going to play it till the gold is tarnished and the nitro red gets patina'd.....is that a word?

I designated it as a hard player because it's got a killer neck....C5/Burstbucker 1, and just plain kicks ass all around.

Polished bone nut installed by LA luthier, Paul Flynn. Icing on the cake, for this tone monster that plays like butter.

That's hot but the gold truss rod cover would have to live in the case.

Wow... I'm in no way shape or form an SG fan and never have been. But this? I just pitched a tent in my pants! That is beautiful! I think you're on the right track. Best way to honor a great instrument? PLAY THE HELL OUT OF IT AND SHOW IT THE LOVE IT DESERVES!!!

As to the OP's situation. I am probably the biggest fan of any and all forms of blue-burst finishes. PLEASE JUST SELL IT OR PLAY IT! I will personally consider any degradation of this finish a crime against humanity and retaliate with a vengeful wrath only to be matched God's own!:rocket:

Re: Thinking of knocking the "pretty" off of my SG Supreme.

Wow! Thanks for all of the entertaining comments! That being said, I think I'll keep it, play the hell out of it and give it its own character. If the new '61 Reissue Satin had 24 frets and an ebony board, I'd be all over it. Unfortunately it doesn't, so I'll keep my Supreme.
