This evening's reamp endeavour

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
Reamped the guitars for another song this evening. The setup was mostly the same as the last song I posted: SM57, SSL, EAST Studio 2. Heavy guitars used the same pedals: Bogner Harlow, Bogner Uberschall, Empress Heavy. The Strats were done quite different this time, however.

The lead Strat in the intro is: Bogner Harlow > AnalogMan SunFace > Maestro PH1 > Echoplex EP3

The Strats in the 5/8 section are Bogner Harlow > JCollocia Horus overdrive

Speakers used are Eminence Swamp Thang, Eminence Wizard, Weber Alnico

I set the levels using the PINK NOISE MIX METHOD, and then did a few tweaks and panning afterwards. This is just the raw tracks, don't even have the finished drums yet, so there's still a ways to go before this one is totally finished...

Re: This evening's reamp endeavour

I would back off the Depth control on the Phaser pedal in the first half of the piece.

The melody guitar(s) in the section from 4:19 are getting lost behind the rhythm guitar chords.

Re: This evening's reamp endeavour

Thanks for listening, it's far from mixed at this point. This is just the raw reamp tracks at this stage. Without vox and final drums there is no need to go whole-hog just yet. I am going to get all of the guitars and synths completed and then go through all of the songs with another pass when I start to bus things out.

The Maestro has no depth control, no mix, no nuthin' -- it kinda is what it is.

Wow, very proggy

Some of it is. Some of it isn't. One section strikes me as being out of context with everything else. I dare say that it will all make sense once lyrics are sung over the top.

Yeah, it's kind of like watching a movie without the dialogue yet! :)

Re: This evening's reamp endeavour

I use the Radial ProRMP passive reamp box.
Typically, I gain stage the DI track so it is peaking at -14dBFS (0 dBu) and run the RMP with the level maxed out.

I use a Mogami TRS to XLR between my interface and the RMP.

I match the output from the SSL so that 0dBu = 14dBFS on the way back in.

Re: This evening's reamp endeavour

Thanks.

I have been wasting time and effort trying to get the tone and performance both right in the same take. I almost ordered an ART product but, (is this politically incorrect?) I'd rather buy the Radial which is manufactured in Canada. I ordered the X-Amp.

Honestly, as elementary as my recording skills are, the biggest challenge to me is playing guitar all the way through a 3-1/2 minute song without screwing it up. I look forward to a time when I will work less and practice more!

Re: This evening's reamp endeavour

That's what prompted me to get into reamping as well; there is just too much to keep track of when recording. I would rather get the performance right and worry about the sound on another day. Reamping has opened up my recording opportunities tenfold because now I can record guitars late at night and then reamp them when I know I will be able to crank my amps.

^^
Lol, I always try to engineer a good live mix and then just record away.

Re: This evening's reamp endeavour

I have done plenty of recordings off the floor, but if faced with a choice between waiting for the perfect circumstances or getting the job done, getting the job done will always win. I don't care if that means using loops and amp sims if I must, the music has gotta get done.
