This ever happen to you?

Re: This ever happen to you?

Geez, you need to find a new band. Being a blues player, I improvise on almost every solo with my band. When I sit in with other bands, or go to a jam, they'll throw new songs at me, that I have to learn on the spot, and 2 minutes into it I'm expected to do a solo. That's where you learn to improvise. Sink or swim.

oh I know how to improvise, for sure...that makes up about 75% of my practice regimen, but I've only ever been in metal bands, so... well yeah... no improvisation during live gigs.

A lot of times, I have heard great guitar players play like ****. Imagine how often that must happen if you aren't great to begin with! Sure as **** happens to me all the time. Don't dwell on it; just practice.

That sucks. You spend all that time honing your improvising skills, and don't get to use it onstage. I also spend the majority of my time practicing improvising, but I don't see any point in getting on stage if I can't use it. Fortunately I have a reputation for nice solos, so whoever I'm playing with will let me cut loose and do what I want. If everything's pretty much planned out before the gig starts, note for note, why not just get a DJ? The band might as well stay home. It's one thing to do covers all night (we've all done that), it's another to mimic everything. To me, the high point of live music is seeing good musicians push themselves to their limits in their solos, when they're inspired by a pumped up crowd. Those are magical moments.

If I were you, I'd look for another band, or even change genres so you can get more creative. You have all this pent up talent. I'd rather go to the dentist than play in a band where I couldn't improvise.

hehe, I left my old metal band about a year and a half ago. And I did change genres - I'm playing loads of blues and rock now. No band though, don't really have the time for it right now. I might try to get something going this spring/summer seeing as I'm almost finished my solo blues/rock album

Allright!

Re: This ever happen to you?

A metal band without improvisation? WTF?

improvising/jamming we saved for writing sessions and drunken tomfoolery. When we were on stage, we played our songs perfectly (or as close as we could get given the mass amounts of practicing, coupled with the inebriation factor)

Re: This ever happen to you?

You mean to say that your guitarist actually played the same solo, note for note, every time you did the song? That's all I meant by "improvisation."
